I didn't understand it at the time. I fail to achieve any degree of understanding in the ensuing years, which are three in number. I presume Herb means that inherently you cannot be commercial and artistic. You cannot be commercial and quality. You cannot be commercial concurrent with have a preoccupation with the level of storytelling that you want to achieve. And this I have to reject. I don't think calling something commercial tags it with a kind of an odious suggestion that it stinks, that it's something raunchy to be ashamed of. I don't think if you say commercial means to be publicly acceptable, what's wrong with that?
As long as you are not ashamed of anything you write if you're a writer, as long as you're not ashamed of anything you perform if you're an actor, and I'm not ashamed of anything.
This is the area I know. But I think innate in what Herb says is the suggestion made by many people that you can't have public acceptance and still be artistic. And, as I said, I have to reject that.

We're more then happy to release his upcoming album together with the french homies of On and On Records (C2C) We have had mutual respect from some time now (and 20syl has been featured on our comp series before) so it made only sense to work closer together. "Tao" is an eclectic mix of the classic elements of Boom-Bap instrumentals and some oriental-ish sounds, it's tempo it's a bit above what you would expect from a classic Hip-Hop beat, which adds to the inspirational, adventurous and uplifting overall vibe of the beat.

I wanted to pay homage to one of the main influences of modern Lo-Fi Hip-Hop: Nujabes. Throughout his catalog, his sound tends to be more melodic and soulful than what you would expect from a 90's beat from the US, which tend to be more grimy and obscure.

In East Asian philosophy, Tao is the natural order of the universe whose character one's human intuition must discern in order to realize the potential for individual wisdom. This intuitive knowing of "life" cannot be grasped as a concept; it is known through actual living experience of one's everyday being. Sometimes it can be translated as "way", "path" or "route". (Wikipedia)

While listening to the final mix of the song, I had the recurring feeling of adventure, as if I was walking into the unknown. I think "Tao" really grasps the uplifting and adventurous feeling of the song.
