Hot off a fiery Rinse FM link up with Steel City Dance Discs and highlight sets at Let Them Eat Cake, Smalltown and HÖR Berlin, Melbourne/Naarm staple Bella Claxton today unveils her debut EP ‘My Joy’, out now via Made of Momentum. 

Announcing her arrival in signature Bella Claxton fashion, the DJ/producer pushes the tempo with thunderous precision on the opening ‘Can You Feel It’. Comprised of hypnotic vocal chants, cascading drums and a pulsating baseline, the Naarm upstart runs it up for a hard dance groove that sets the soul alight. The power continues on the title track as Bella delves into her soul bag for a vocal-driven thumper that’s primed for all lovers of ‘90s rave, with the hook ‘You can’t control my life’ helping to transcend listeners into the fourth, fifth, & sixth dimensions. The third cut, the much-awaited ‘Can’t Stop Me’, sees Bella push her production chops into overdrive as she encapsulates the momentum defining her meteoric rise to prominence. // Was bedeutet deine Musik für dich? //
Musik war schon immer ein großer Teil von meinem Leben. Mit Musik macht einfach alles mehr Spaß. Vor allem beim selbst auflegen, weil dann ist nur noch die Musik da. Und wenn ich dann noch sehe, wie Leute zu meiner Musik tanzen geht mir das Herz auf. <3 Beim Auflegen ist mein Kopf auch total frei von allem was sonst in meinem Leben passiert und ich kann einfach loslassen. Am liebsten lege ich melodische, emotionale, aber doch happy trancy Lieder auf und versuche damit dieses Gefühl vom Loslassen an die Leute auf der Tanzfläche weiterzugeben.

// Woher nimmst du deine Inspiration? //
Inspiration bekomme ich vor allem viel durch andere Künstler*innen. Wenn ich mir Sets auf z.B. YouTube anschaue oder auf SoundCloud höre, will ich am liebsten gleich selbst hinter die Decks. Aber vor allem andere DJs live zu hören, und zu sehen, wie sie Spaß an ihrer Musik haben inspiriert mich total.


// Was muss sich deiner Meinung nach an der Szene ändern? //
Ich wünsche mir, dass Lineups diverser werden und sich mehr FLINTA*-Personen an die Decks trauen. Gerade am Anfang kann die cis-männlich dominierte Szene ziemlich einschüchternd sein – das habe ich selbst erlebt und höre es auch von vielen anderen FLINTA*-Personen in meinem Umfeld. Noch immer sind Lineups oft kaum divers besetzt, und ich hoffe, dass sich das in Zukunft ändert. Es sollte ganz selbstverständlich sein, dass auch FLINTA*-Künstler*innen die großen Clubbühnen bespielen.
Aber nicht nur, wer hinter den Decks steht, ist wichtig, sondern auch das Miteinander auf der Tanzfläche. Ein achtsamer Umgang ist wichtig, damit persönliche Grenzen gewahrt werden und alle entspannt feiern können – frei von Diskriminierung und Sexismus. Daher: Seid einfach immer lieb zueinander!
