There is nothing contrived about the kind of playing that comes jolting out of Booker Ervin’s tenor saxophone and the great quality of soul reflected on the six tracks of “The Book Cooks.” The album is introduced by George Tucker’s bass on The Blue Book followed by Tommy Flanagan, Booker Ervin, Tommy Turrentine, and Zoot Sims in that order. Next, Ervin’s opening blues are propelled beautifully on Git It followed by the Mingus’ inspired Little Jane. Side B kicks off with a strong performance from Booker and Zoot on The Book Cooks followed by Ervin’s composition Largo and ending with a stellar performance of Poor Butterfly.

Clogs are a mostly instrumental project led by Bryce Dessner and Australia's Padma Newsome, both men familiar from their membership in the acclaimed rock band, The National. But don't call Clogs a side project.
