On this program, we look at Puerto Rican protest songs over the past two centuries, including Paracumbé's subversive bomba dances from the time of slavery, Las Barrileras 8M, an all-women drumming group demanding an end to violence against women and a new plena from Hector Tito Matos about the death of George Floyd.

The past three years have been incredibly traumatic for Puerto Rico: two hurricanes followed by slow recovery efforts that led to the death of 3,057 on the island, a text message scandal mocking women’s rights that eventually brought down a governor, the deaths of more unarmed Black men, women and children across the United States and of course the coronavirus pandemic.

Producer Dan Rosenberg looks at how artists across Puerto Rico including Plena Libre helped in the healing process after Hurricane Maria by performing for those who lost their homes in the storm. We’ll hear music from marches that led to the resignation of Governor Ricardo Rosello.

“We’ve been under attack from nature and bad governments and so many things since 2017, and from before, but 2017 made us more aware,” explains Nelie Lebron-Robles. “Here we are. One nation with a very distinct Latin American identity, very proud of who we are. We’ve discovered we can do anything that we propose ourselves to do.”

Building on the success of his 2018 album, Honest Lee is back with the first single off of his forthcoming 2021 album. In between playing shows and running the Growroom Productions label, Lee has found time to record some fresh new music. Not one to let off steam or coast during the pandemic, Honest Lee has some brand new funk for the heads.
On his latest, Honest Lee brings analog breakbeat for the dance floor, with fuzzy guitar leads, Rhodes stabs and a heavy kick, propelling you to get up and move. Pushing the track over the edge are thunderous tom drum solos from the Terrapin Family Band's drummer, and Honest Lee's cohort in The Harry Bells' percussion section, Nathan Graham.
The title refers to the unofficial drink of Turkey, raki, also known as Lion's Milk and the mood reflecting those late, hot nights, finishing nightcaps after an evening of good food and conversation. Enjoy a sweet taste of the next full length Honest Lee album set to be released early 2021.

Søndae Records is back with the second single from Jack & Jointz. The duo — comprised of German producers Quincy Jointz and Thorsten Walter — have teamed up again with legendary singer Ashley Slater. Ashley, of course, is known as the vocalist for Freak Power, as well as his supercharged collaborations with Rory Hoy. He’s become a regular (virtual) fixture in the Jack & Jointz studio, providing vocals for five songs on their debut album. And now it’s time for the latest — “Holy Water.”

“Holy Water” is a break-up song. But how does a break-up song sound with a singer like Ashley? One can guess it won’t be in schmaltzy ballad territory. Instead it’s something groovy, with funky bass and chunky mid-tempo beats. London-based Lucia La Rezza adds beautiful violin melodies for extra musical layers over Jack & Jointz' crisp production. And Ashley’s distinctive vocals excel — emotive and affecting, it’s the sound of a pro at the top of his game.

The single also includes an instrumental for bonus DJ action. Get soaked in some “Holy Water!”
