FOOTNOTES:
TRACK 2 - Written by Harry Nilsson for  a scene between Olive Oyl (Shelley Duvall) and Popeye (Robin Williams) in Robert Altman’s 1980 film Popeye. Altman recounts the hiring of Nilsson, "Nobody wanted him at first except Robin Williams. Everyone said 'You'll get in trouble with him -- he'll get drunk; he won't do it; he's all washed up.' As a matter of fact I said all of those things about Harry to Robin myself one day. Then I went home and thought about it and said to myself, 'Jesus, that's what some people are saying about me!' So I called Harry Nilsson, because I had never met him in my life, and we got along terrifically." The song was later adapted by Jon Brion for Paul Thomas Anderson’s 2002 film Punch-Drunk Love. 

TRACK 5 - A retired ice hockey player and current AGM of the Rangers, Jim Schoenfeld briefly dabbled with music, releasing his first of two albums, Schony, in 1972. The album features only one original composition by Schoenfeld: “Before.” 

TRACK 10 - According to a Bill Fay fan site, Bill Fay called this track "Noise of Me.” Not much is known besides that it was recorded in London in the 1960s.

TRACK 12 - A Townes Van Zandt cover by RT N’ the 44s, “a Folk Noir band created by singer/songwriter RT Valine... using instruments crafted from tin, 2x4's and salvaged parts. RT N’ the 44s was born out of ‘an attempt to make listenable music from junk’."

TRACK 13 - From The Beginning of Doves, an extensive collection of pre-T. Rex, pre-glam rock demos, outtakes, and sessions recorded between 1966 and 1967, released in 1972. 

TRACK 14 - The Maureeny Wishfull Album, a 1968 release with only about 300 pressings, features pre-Zeppelin Jimmy Page (also of Yardbirds fame) on guitar and sitar. 

TRACK 15 - Eliza Douglas’ short-lived, little-known musical project, featuring Devendra Banhart and friends. Only a few songs surfaced, in the 2007 Myspace era.

Chronology of Satan

This is a music-only playlist adapted from the live episode of "Lost and Sound" that originally aired on February 4, 2015 on UCLA Radio (ep. 4).

50 years of songs about Satan, chronologically ordered (1926-1976)-- a mix I've been working on for a while. Everything from the obvious choices (Robert Johnson, Elvis...) to rare and wonderful obscurities and even field recordings from Art Rosenbaum's American travels. I was not able to put every song with Satan in the name, e.g. The Rolling Stones' "Sympathy for the Devil," so I centered the playlist around overall lyrical content and theme.

This episode of “Lost and Sound” originally aired live on UCLA Radio on February 11, 2015.

The theme of this episode is putting our differences aside and bonding through our fundamental humanity. The playlist and talking segments are based on Victor Turner’s anthropological theory of “COMMUNITAS” as it applies to music: “What happens during a good performance is that the multiple differences among us are forgotten and we are fully focused on an activity that emphasizes our sameness…of spirit…as well as our direct interaction” - Thomas Turino.

This playlist is not necessarily based on the chosen songs’ lyrics, but rather the groove, trance, hypnotism, sweat, dancing, bonding, and merging that I associate with these artists and/or their concerts.

COMMUNITAS: Anthropologist Victor Turner's Theory Applied to Psych, Trance, Shoegaze, Juju...

This episode of “Lost and Sound” is entirely about film music: sound sources, scores, soundtracks, musicals, live scoring, temp music, cutting, and the works. It aired live on February 18, 2015 on UCLA Radio. My special guest was filmmaker Michael R. Miller, a wonderful friend of mine as well as a fellow New Yorker, with a big heart, a love of music, and the best stories about the glory days of film you could ask for. Michael teaches us about the use of music to enhance a story, and walks us through classic soundtracks and scores, such as "Taxi Driver," "Pulp Fiction," and "The Big Lebowski." He also shares incredible stories about working with Woody Allen, his chance meeting with the Coen brothers who he would go on to work on several films with, and Martin Scorsese tracking down the "Psycho" composer.

A Cornell alumnus, Michael’s tremendous career began as an assistant editor on Woody Allen’s "Manhattan" and "Stardust Memories," and Martin Scorsese’s "Raging Bull." The rest is history: "Raising Arizona," "Miller’s Crossing," "Swing Kids," "Stigmata," "Ghost World," "Strangers With Candy," and a whopping list of other beloved pop culture pictures.

Michael has written for The Village Voice, Millimeter Magazine and American Cinema Editor, and is a frequent lecturer at the New York Film Academy, the American Film Institute and North Carolina School of the Arts. He is also a member of the editing branch of AMPAS, ACE, and the Motion Picture Editors Guild.

Michael R. Miller (Woody Allen, Coen brothers, Scorsese) Talks Classic Scores & Soundtracks

This playlist is adapted from episode 7 of Lost and Sound, which aired live on February 25, 2015 on UCLA Radio.  It also features a few audio clips from the original live show.

The theme of this mix is PLAY PARTY: song games, hand games, ring games, rare & goofy soul jams, American folklore, double dutch songs, and rhyme songs. The field recordings you are about to hear come from Art Rosenbaum’s Art of Field Recording compilations, as well as Bess Lomax Hawes and Bob Eberlein’s 1967 film Pizza Pizza Daddy-O.

I'm currently working on a research project investigating the history of handgames, the lyrical variations depending on region and era, and the possible lineage of hand clapping culture, tracing back to the "pattin' juba"/hambone style created by slaves. This musical style developed as a loophole to the 1740 Black Codes, which banned the usage of traditional African drums due to the 1739 Stono Rebellion in South Carolina. The Black Codes left a percussive void in their traditional music. They filled this void through resourceful ad hoc percussion instruments (bones, washboards, jugs, etc.) as well as clapping of the hands and patting of the thighs, which young girls' ring games and contemporary urban step dance bare resemblance to.
