"Saturday in NYC was by far one of the best nights of my life. Tipper & lil Johnny Singer had some kids seriously rethinking their lives. I heard one kid saying he needed to call his mom to tell her he loved her... Priceless. The after party at Slake went off flawlessly. Definitely the biggest and most beautiful crowd I've had the opportunity to play for. Never mind the cage dancing, top notch sound and production staff. So much love to everyone in attendance and everyone who helped make it happen. Lostinsound tribe was in full force and full rage-alia. Haven't seen that many of the crew together in years. . BIG UPS to the Planet Cognac fam, Mr. Bugsley and Good Looks NY for making monolithic moves in NYC. Watching everyone work together towards spreading experimental art and music in the heart of babylon is incredibly inspiring to say the least."

Where are you from?
I've been living in Nelson, BC, Canada for the last 15 years. Prior to that Vancouver was a home for 9 years.

Tell us how and why you became a DJ. 
If we go way back into the personal history, the beginnings of DJ'ing involved a mix tape, a small ghetto blaster, some 80s classics and a sock hop in the gym in grade 6. From there the mix tape became one of the main staples of my youth and was a way to boil down the best of whatever genre of music that was out there into one continuous listening experience. I went through a lot of cassettes and, in fact, still have almost every mix tape I ever made.
Fast forward a few years to the rave movement that swept the world in the early 90s and you'll find all sorts of stories of where DJ'ing all began for so many of us. After clubbing and going to a few raves in Vancouver I got instantly hooked on the music, the vibe and the scene and wanted to have more electronic music around me in my everyday life. I bought my first 12"s in Santa Cruz, CA in '94 (REZ by Underworld amidst others) and didn't stop collecting music for next couple of decades. I got my first set of turntables in '95 while living in Brighton, UK and practiced in my bedroom til someone asked me to come play some tunes at a house party back in East Vancouver in '96. The DJ story pretty much began there.

What is the music scene like in BC?
Really vibrant in certain places up here. Vancouver, Victoria, Nelson and Kelowna all have great electronic events going on year round with smaller cities and towns in-between developing their own local scenes. There is a lot of exceptional talent and several cutting edge events that have emerged over the years that have earned some well-deserved international recognition. Many of the summer festivals that happen each year - both large and smaller scale - are incredible and bring together a diverse crowd of music heads from both the old and new school. Bass, breaks, EDM, D'n'B, house, techno, dub, hip hop, glitch hop and downtempo all have their fair representation amidst the many varied and colorful shades of the electronic culture up here in this neck of the woods.

Where do you usually play gigs?
These days, gigs seem to cluster around the summer festival season here in BC with the occasional booking coming in from somewhere farther afield. This year I played in Panama, in Washington State and on the east coast of Canada, just outside of Toronto. In the off season, I'll play a few local club gigs, one-offs and house parties.

Describe your preferred live set up
I don't really play 'live'. As a DJ I play using Serato with CDJs and a Pioneer mixer. Every now and then I'll bring a Kaos Pad to a show. Next year, I'll be working a Maschine into my sets to add more of a live element.

Tell us about your time working with Interchill records, what attracted you to label management.   I've been involved with Interchill since about 2000. I started out representing the label as a DJ and doing some independent distribution til the kind government of Canada handed me a professional development grant to travel to Australia to learn more about the international music industry (how that sounds and how it actually went down on the ground are two rather different things). A few years later I was hired by Andrew Ross Collins, the label's founder, to manage Interchill after gaining some valuable experience working with Native State Records - an IDM/downtempo label founded by Bluetech. I stayed on as label manager for Interchill for about 6 years and handled a lot of the day to day operations from press, promo and copy editing to A&R, distribution and preparing albums for release. I also put together a couple of compilations in that time. Andrew resumed his lead role with the label a couple of years ago while I continue to be closely involved with consultation, graphic design as well as working on a new compilation. 
 How are you involved with Boom Festival in Portugal and what is your roll there. 
I'm not currently working with Boom Festival beyond being an honorary crew member. From 2002-2008 though, I spearheaded the Liminal Village - the visionary arts and cultural hub of the festival. This was a zone that included a conference and workshop component as well as an art gallery, demonstration permaculture gardens, an onsite zine and a film festival, all of which was under the umbrella/theme of the psychedelic imagination and global festival culture. It was an amazing project to work on for those years and allowed for some great collaborations, some of which continued to expand and evolve over the years since. I stepped down in 2010 due to family circumstances and gave the keys to the Liminal Village to a new production team. I went back to Boom in 2012 to do stage management at the Alchemy Circle, Boom's techno and bass stage. Boom is unlike any other festival I've been to around the world and I can foresee continuing to be involved with it in the coming years.

If you could play anywhere where would it be?
Wherever there's an inspiring event happening with switched on people in an interesting location.

If you could play a show with anyone who would it be?

Oxóssi is one of those under the radar type cats. Lucky for us were using old school out of commision russian satellites to track movement on our underground bass music big screen monitors. When I discovered his remix of Jefferson Airplanes legendary psychedelic rock tune "White Rabbit" I immediately reached out to connect with the young man. His tunes have been sprinkled throughout my mixtapes and live sets. Kadian Dub was an instant neck breaker on the dancefloor. Jesse's attitude towards bass music and community combined with his unique take on an old school sound is heard clearly through his music. High quality sounds, balanced and spaced to create hypnotic polyrhythms and psychotropic hallucinations.
