Seattle musician and city bus driver, Levoneh, is releasing their album Ground on March 18 on Cruisin Records, in collaboration with Lost Sound Tapes. The psychedelic-folk band is the project of composer and producer Ross Kirshenbaum. Fans of Jay Som and Mount Eerie will be drawn in by Kirshenbaum’s indie guitar tracks laid over live recordings in the wet forests of the PNW.

Ground marks a journey of transformation and reflection through the heartbreak of facing a smoldering world and an ongoing pandemic. The tracks are an extension of the political work Kirshenbaum engaged with where he witnessed first-hand the power of collective action to connect with others and shift systems of power. He hopes these songs can offer somatic political awareness, helping people transition from despair and apathy to realizing how deeply needed their contributions are in the struggle towards racial, economic, and climate justice. Drawing from musical influences deeply rooted in rain, vistas, and every shade of green imaginable, Ground seeks to honor the rituals of love, self-healing, and introspection that will ultimately build us a new, liberatory future.

About Levoneh
Levoneh is a collaborative music project led by composer and producer, Ross Kirshenbaum, based in Seattle, WA on unseeded Duwamish territory. Kirshenbaum grew up in the PNW, deeply influenced by the coalescence of gritty, ethereal, and moody music that evolved there. Levoneh reflects the absorption and digestion of these dichotomies, combining elements of electro-acoustic, psychedelic pop soundscapes with deeply vulnerable protest folk songs.

Levoneh "Where You Were"

Stuck in the Present Tense is an album of songs written about eight years ago but only recently recorded. Craig joked that he wanted to record these songs by the time he turned forty. But then he turned forty, there was no album, the rest of the band had moved away. Miraculously, the band regrouped in Seattle in the winter of 2021 for just long enough to relearn the songs, play the Magic Lanes living room, and record. And while Craig, in the intervening years, had forgotten lyrics and guitar solos (long replaced in the brain by bossa nova fake books), Jacob's acumen for shredding soared (Two Tigers solo), John got arty (Kathmandu bass harmonics), and Zach triumphed the taps (Jubilee).

None of the songs are set in the present, and while hardly any of them are even relevant to the songwriter anymore, the underlying idea here is something persistent: nostalgia, heartbreak, big plans, daydreams, and reminiscences can simultaneously be refuges and blackholes. How does anyone have time to reflect on the past, make a five-year plan, and do the dishes over the course of a single day? These songs are kind of about running that existential gauntlet through a series of mundane experiences like rain, roses, pictures, and snow.

Did you know Jason recorded the Tiger Trap side of their split with Bratmobile on his 4-track? It was also the very first Tiger Trap release. Love to see people grow and change and flourish.

Knife Pleats is the newest project from the prolific Rose Melberg, whose past projects include Tiger Trap, The Softies, Go Sailor, Gaze, Imaginary Pants, PUPS, and several solo records. The first singles from the Vancouver-based project, which features Kaity McWhinney and Tracey Vath of Love Cuts and drummer Gregor Phillips, recall the sounds Melberg is most known for: crisp and bouncy guitar pop and heartfelt lyrics. 

On “One Step Too Far,” Melberg contemplates the passage of time (“Please don’t change too much too fast these days won’t last long”) against lively arraignments. “Terrible” is slightly more pensive, a reflection of the inner workings of a relationship. Both tracks are sure to appeals to Melberg fans old and new.

Split cassette tape time, eastern Canada edition! Sparkle Water from Halifax, Nova Scotia and Family Video from St John’s, Newfoundland team up for this cassette release and compliment each other nicely. 

Let’s start on side A with Sparkle Water. We have 5 lofi, post punk, pop songs from them. Sparkle Water is comprised of Jill Ratattack, Juls Generic, and David Barclay. They could also be known as Club Soda, Seltzer, Carbonated Water, L’eau gazeuse, etc. David Barclay has been in bands that Lost Sound Tapes has worked with in the past such as The Endless Bummer and Red Pony Clock and that’s how this release came to be. Sparkle Water songs are hyponotic, catchy, sharp. 

Family Video is the musical project of Jam King that started in Vancouver in 2012 with the release of a cassette titled “Fun + Sad”. Jam and co have since relocated back to Newfoundland and released 3 more albums including “Maybe This Summer” which was released on tape by Gold Flake Tapes in the UK. Family Video songs always have a somber, cinematic feel to them with Jam’s unmistakeable vocals floating above the guitars and drums. It’s no surprise that they’ve released seven different music videos. 4 tracks span 14 minutes on their side of this tape.

New six song EP from Vancouver, B.C. trio Shrouded Amps! “Come Along to the Chocolate Church” is performed by primary songwriter Matthew Budden, bassist Tracey Vath (Knife Pleats / Love Cuts), and drummer Eirinn M (Bad Fate). Recorded, mixed, and mastered in Vancouver with Tom Prilesky at Spirit Vegetable. 

This Shrouded Amps release has a grungy pop feel with male/female vocal interplay, mathy drumming, and clever melodies. It wouldn’t be out of place to file their tape along side Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr, Eric’s Trip, or contemporary Vancouver bands such as Woolworm or Dead Soft. The melodies, lyrics and 12-string guitar really make Shrouded Amps songs stand out and give them distinction from anything that may be similar.

Release date: March 2, 2018

Badlands is the musical project of multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Adrian Chi Tenney from Los Angeles, CA. “Slow Growth” is ten songs about growth, change, love, recovery and resilience. Tenney intends to use her layered vocals and instruments to create mysterious, haunting harmonies and soundscapes inspired by environmental and political landscapes. This is the second full length album for Badlands, the first on Lost Sound Tapes, and is the follow up to the 2013 album “So Little”. The album title is quite appropriate as many of these songs are filled with layers that build up over time in addition to the lyrical content that explores social justice issues, resistance, introspection, and healing. The most powerful track on the album is "Work To Do” which touches on examples of racism present in our culture today, and shows how much work we still have to do, both privately and publicly, to dismantle it. On this album is also a Donna Summer cover, the song "I Feel Love", which acts as a radical mantra of self love and confidence.

"THIS REMINDS ME" is a tribute compilation to the music and songs of Baltimore-based, home taping / bedroom-pop legend Linda Smith. Linda released albums and singles on Slumberland, Harriet Records, Feel Good All Over, and her own Preference Recordings label. She was a member of the folky rock band The Woods in the late 80's (not the current one) and a member of the indie pop band Silly Pillows during the late 90's. In a fair and just world (which we do not live in), Linda Smith should be mentioned in the same breath as R. Stevie Moore, Daniel Johnston, and The Mountain Goats. 

The compilation contains 19 tracks in total from Rose Melberg ("All That I Can Give"), Christina Scheneider ("It's Your Party Too"), Silly Pillows ("Figment Of Your Imagination"), Keel Her ("Take This"), and many more. Each track is an interpretation of one of the original songs, most of which were released between 1987 and 2001. Some of these covers are quite true to the original recording while some take an entirely different approach. Several years ago, Bob Huff ("Lonely's Not The Word") and Michael Willis ("All I Did"), friends of Linda Smith, decided to record covers of a few of her songs. This sparked interest in other artists covering her songs and over the span of a couple years Linda slowly collected these 19 tracks and compiled them as one album.

New project from Zoe Wyner of Boston indie rock band Halfsour!

Zoe says: "After being in Halfsour for 4 years I wanted a chance to push my boundaries a bit and try something new. Teaching myself to play a new instrument for this project has allowed me to approach it in a non traditional way and take it wherever sounds right to me. I also started this project just before I turned 29 and was thinking a lot about friendships and values as I leave my 20s. Halfsour is mostly about fun for me whereas Temporary Eyesore is much more reflective."

We are proud to announce our first release of 2019. It's the album "Too Mystical" by Space Daze, which is the solo project of Danny Rowland of Seapony. Lost Sound Tapes released Seapony's "A Vision" back in 2015. Well since then Seapony went on hiatus, had a baby, and came back to life to play the occasional show in Seattle. Even before their hiatus Danny started creating new music under the name Space Daze and this is the second proper album. "Too Mystical" follows the first album "Follow My Light Back Home" which was released on tape in 2014 by Beautiful Strange and the CD of compiled works "Waves Collapsing" which was released by Jigsaw Records in 2018. 

This album contains 9 tracks of mellow, tender, pop songs in the same vein as Seapony but also would fit nicely along side Real Estate or Beach Fossils. Space Daze has a unique ability to write beautiful melodic songs with perfectly effortless guitar leads and an air of distinctly northwest mysticism. Catch them playing shows in and around Seattle and you might even see Jen and Ian of Seapony on stage along side Danny.

The lineage of bands from Brazilian master mind Lê Almeida is long and varied. Oura is Le's newest group. They're a trio featuring Lê Almeida on guitar, keyboard, and vocals, João Luiz on bass, and Daniel Duarte on drums. Also contributions by João Casaes, Renato Godoy, Evandro Fernandez, and many others. We have released an album "Paraleloplasmos" and an EP "Pre Ambulatorio" previously for Lê Almeida's solo project which is a catchy indie rock band in the vein of Pavement, Guided By Voices, and Dinosaur Jr. Oruã is a darker and looser group while still retaining a pop sensibility within the frame work of Brazilian psych rock. This time they've added some jazz influences and a dose of Black Sabbath. 

"Sem Bênção / Sem Crença" is a 13 song album that runs 71 minutes long. Lê Almeida and João Luiz of Oruã are now members of Built To Spill along with their frequent collaborator João Casaes. Look for them on tour with Built To Spill for most of this year. First they will be touring in Europe for 5 weeks in April 2019 and then a full U.S. and Canada tour Summer/Fall 2019.

Lica Rezende moved to Vancouver, Canada, for a two-year minimum wage sabbatical in the Aussie summer of 2017. Feeling vivacious in Vancity, she bit the bullet and started frequenting gigs alone. On one of those nights, she drunkenly admitted to local cool-dad rocker Adrian Teacher how her proto-band with boyfriend Joe was desperate for a drummer, to which Teacher suggested his friend and indie legend Rose Melberg. As a long-time fan of Tiger Trap, Go Sailor, The Softies and Knife Pleats, Lica lost her shit.

Somehow, the suggestion was totally meant to be and the three of them, Joe, Alice and Rose, started Olivia’s World.

In May 2018, they recorded six songs at Terry and Jordan Koop’s The Noise Floor studio in Gabriola Island (Koop’s work discog includes Wolf Parade, The Courtneys, Dead Soft, WEED, Versing and several other Pacific Northwest gems). With Jordan’s help, Olivia’s World felt as though the songs were the soundtrack to their short-lived, intense experience in Vancouver (still, one-third of the band had been living there for eleven years).

Bouncy, sweet, and punchy, opening song "Blotter" aims to be a quick-hit peek into the trio’s perfect pop songwriting sensibilities. You might hear nods to bands like Dick Diver and The Courtneys.

Back in heat-stricken Brisbane, Alice & Joe plan to debut Olivia’s World EP on October 25th, 2019 via Lost Sound Tapes, with new members joining the band on this side of the world.

Lunchbox's Tim Brown and Donna McKean have been making records in their Oakland, California basement for two decades, inspired by 1960s/70s AM-radio pop and TV show theme music, punk, C86, and mod à la the Creation and the Jam. From the sonically-inventive indiepop of "The Magic of Sound" (1999) to the dub-influenced psychedelia of "Evolver" (2001) to the critically-acclaimed bubblegum of "Lunchbox Loves You" (2013), the couple have established a sound all their own.

Their new album, "After School Special," finds them at the height of their powers of songcraft and performance. Donna's bass playing stakes out stylistic territory somewhere between Carol Kaye and John Entwhistle while Tim's guitar is equal parts 12-string jangle and clipped Orange Juice-esque funk. Horns by Gary Olson (Ladybug Transistor) and longtime collaborator Jeremy Goody drive the record from beginning to end. Evelyn Davis' delay-drenched keyboards combine with whispers of analog tape feedback to give the record an otherworldly vibe in keeping with its lyrical themes.

Their favorite seasons (autumn) and animals (cats) appear alongside love and death, ghosts and reincarnation. From the shimmering opener "Dream Parade" to the horn-driven mod-pop of "Hide and Seek," the groovy sixties R&B vibe of "I Really Wanna Know" and the haunting male-female vocal stylings of the title track and album closer, the textures shift while the unity of artistic vision remains. Catchy as hell and beautifully packaged, "After School Special" is Lunchbox at their very best.

"Soft Dial Tone", SOAR's follow up to "Dark / Gold", finds the band in a moment of personal growth: a house plant moved from the dark corner of the room to a sunnier spot with some new soil; a consistent pattern of collaboration and friendship is established through the layering and highlighting of voices, instrumentation and ideas. Each member contributes at least one song to "Soft Dial Tone". With these individual perspectives, there are common threads that connect each person in SOAR. The cultivation of positive outlets to examine and release the anxiety and depression felt from isolation and collective pain and processing. The empathy and existential distance felt in family relations and individual and group identities.

Sonically, "Soft Dial Tone" is more subdued with finer clarity, more dynamics and moments of power bursting through surface tension. Experimenting with new instruments, textures, and volumes SOAR remains oblique and familiar.

At this moment of uncertainty with a feeling of fragile humanity, we wanted to share this album. In some ways incomplete, while also realized and whole. Nothing is perfect, everything hurts sometimes, and true harmony balances dissonance and unanimity.
