Synopsis:
During the darkest hours of the night, while the rest of the world is sleeping, outdoor photographer Paul Zizka ventures out into the wilderness in search of the world’s starriest skies. His journey to photograph the celestial wonders takes him from his home amongst the peaks of the Canadian Rockies to the wild, desert dunes of Namibia and remote ice caps of Greenland. Ever the adventurer, he must balance his work and passion for photography with his equal devotion as a family man. In the Starlight is an intimate portrayal of Paul’s quest to capture the night skies, and what his time spent under the stars has taught him about life, love, adventure, and our place in the universe.

Orbital Resonance

We interrupt our ongoing "Best of 2022" feature to take a breath and spend some time with [new] music. Music, after all, does not believe in time, it just becomes into existence when it's ready [sort of like us, but without the self-importance]. It doesn't know that there's a "schedule". It doesn't know that it may fade away before I bring it into existence once more, from the beginning. "Sounds arise from nothing and return to nothing." And so it's ready to be heard. Thus, today, I'm listening to a new piece by an Italian musician and sound artist, Daniele Bogon, who recently got picked up by Slowcraft Records for his upcoming album, Del Suono e Della Luce, scheduled to be released on February 3rd. The track I'm premiering for you today, titled "Prima Luce", is a highly textured, emotive sip of widescreen ambience that is both cerebral and prosaic, just as this form intends to be. It's a perfect introduction to his full length, "a brightly lit electronic work provoking visceral, intense impressions, [on which] the finely judged minimal aesthetic reinforces our long-held belief that less truly is more." Fans of soundscapes, drones, and analogue modular synth frequencies, along with those evoked from Bogon's guitar, hand made instruments, and piano, all captured, reworked and processed through a chain of fuzzy machines, will feel perfectly at home with this music, happy to be interrupted, at any point in time.

Sound In Silence is happy to welcome back Ben Rath, presenting his new album Resolve.

This is his third album on the label after the highly acclaimed, and already sold out, Forgiveness in 2016 and Anything Is Possible in 2018.

Ben Rath is an ambient multi-instrumentalist based in Manchester, UK, who has been putting out sublime releases on labels such as Eilean Rec., Unknown Tone Records, Cathedral Transmissions, Triple Moon Records and others. He has also put out two releases, an EP and an album, with his acoustic lo-fi side-project Slow Heart Music and an EP with his electronic side-project Astral Harmonies.

Based on a loose concept imagining a post-collapse society in which a committee is sent back in time to observe events as they unfolded and report back on how things went so wrong, this project reflects Ben's attempts to process and work through his own political anxiety and apocalyptic unease. Exploring the emotional and psychological toll of living in a post-Brexit and post-Covid Britain, plagued by corruption, state abandonment, and failing institutions, the music on Resolve travels through a sonic landscape of grief, melancholy, and political anger, as well as a stubborn hope for a better future and a dream of a world based on love, care, and mutual solidarity.

This is a limited edition of 200 handmade and hand-numbered collectible copies. It is packaged in a lovely hand-stamped 127mm x 127mm 260 gsm ivory recycled cardboard envelope with the front cover image printed on a polaroid style photo paper and an insert sheet containing tracklist and information printed on a 120 gsm white recycled cardboard. It also comes bundled with a download code coupon and a Sound In Silence card.

Ben Rath - Resolve (Part I)

It's time that I check in with Denovali once again. This independent German label really knows how to curate its releases that span a variety of genres, ranging from ambient to experimental, drone to jazz, and contemporary classical. Regardless of the style, the quality of the output is always top-notch, and since 2006, I've managed to highlight many of their albums. Whether it's Blueneck, Dictaphone, Subheim, Hidden Orchestra, Bersarin Quartett or the beloved The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble [and too many others to name!], somehow Denovali just seems to hit all the right notes. If for some reason, you are new to this imprint, I highly recommend you spend a lot of time digging through the catalogue, and please, don't forget the earlier releases! So when I get a promo from this label, I always take my time to listen through. [Note to artists and composers: whether you love it or hate it - this is the value that a "label" can really add to your music - in this case, they literally put their stamp of approval on the release, and that alone is worth my attention.] Contemporary Noise Ensemble is new to my ears, but from the first track, I am instantly mesmerized by their fresh and upbeat take on funky jazz that falls somewhere between Ninja Tune's earlier Skalpel, Jaga Jazzist, Xploding Plastix, and even a bit of Propellerheads. If those artist names mean anything to you, then you know what you're in for with An Excellent Spiritual Serviceman. And now, the track premiere!

As mentioned above, the project is new to me, but as I dig deeper, I find out that one of the members is none other than Jakub Kapsa, who appeared on these pages under his Kuba Kapsa moniker a few years ago with Supersonic Moth. Here, a previously extended arrangement of brass instruments is replaced with sprawling synths and electric bass. Meanwhile, Bartosz Kapsa [and, you’ve guessed it, they are brothers!] is absolutely killing it on the jazzy drums! Reduced from the sextet to a duo, the newly formed ensemble delivers a cohesive, fun and powerful shot in the arm of the elemental funk through the fusion of instruments and genres. And it gets my head bopping here!

The album takes you on a journey through jazz, space rock, funk and electronic music with a destination in the form of a rock song which is as well the title song of the album. The Contemporary Noise Ensemble still impresses with maturity and class.

If Lost Tribe Sound were tasked with inventing the ideal musical leviathan for the label, experimental cellist Alder & Ash would perhaps be the crowning achievement of such an undertaking. The framework of such a beast would be formed of heavy creaking timber, the beating heart of the creature - labored and thumping along steadily like an ancient, ill-timed metronome. The strong limbs would be held together by signews of lamb gut and metal, able to reach out in calm and caress, yet also capable of lashing out in brutal fits of devastation and frustration. 

Exploring similar themes as Alder & Ash’s latest album ‘Clutched in the Maw of the World’, 'Psalms for the Sunder' thrives in opposing extremes. As the title suggests, 'Psalms for the Sunder' is a study of downfall and collapse. The work explores the boundaries, the desolation and despair, among the edges of things come undone. In that tension and space it finds not only cacophony, violence and decay, but also bittersweetness and calm.

'Psalms…' immediately shocked us at headquarters when we first heard it. Sadly overlooked when self-released in 2016 by the artist, LTS realized it must be given a proper introduction to the world by reissuing it in a handcrafted physical edition along side the brand new full-length ‘Clutched in the Maw...’. As the fearless writers of the music site ‘A Closer Listen’ mention “Alder & Ash is one a handful of performers who choose to investigate the full potential of their instruments. As foreboding as the set may be, the music also includes moments of tenderness…some pensive and some angry, but all confident and strong. This is a suite of dust and chalk and the ascendence of the grey.”
