Paper Relics is a collaboration between Whitelabrecs owner Harry Towell and his brother Stuart. They began recording together back in 2010 at their family home, with an EP on the Audio Gourmet netlabel which was followed by debut album ‘Over Exposure’ on Time Released Sound. In 2018 they created ‘The Road Home’ for Whitelabrecs, a record in which Sven Laux also had a hand.

The Paper Relics sound takes Stuart’s guitar and bass performances as the focal point of the compositions, with Harry’s background in creating Ambient and electro acoustic music adding further detail and texture. Each of their infrequent records has an evolving character, as equipment and techniques get updated and their lives change. Over Exposure was a record about photography, reflecting upon faded old family polaroids of life on the farm that their father grew up on. The Road Home moved into a richer more detailed sound palette, themed around the brothers’ new homes.

‘Emersion’ is a four track EP which is the first item in their discography, in which they did not physically sit down to record together. It was created through file-exchanges during lockdown, as glimpses of a life beyond the grip of the pandemic became in sight. As cautious plans were being made and a strange sense of freedom emerging, they reflected on the time-warping effects of their endless days spent indoors throughout the pandemic. They opted for a lo-fi retro sound, which sets out a dusty, degraded aesthetic across the recordings. Reel-to-reel tape decay, radio distortion, vinyl crackle and VHS hiss give a vintage charm to these reflective songs. There is a palpable melancholy which disguises the key message of optimism, with this EP being released on the 19th of July, a day being dubbed ‘freedom day’ in the UK. ‘Emersion’ is a brief space for reflection, in which the dust can settle.

After the album had been finalised, Stuart took a short break in the Scottish Highlands and he captured a series of photographs whilst hiking in the landscape. The EP cover artwork is one of these images, overlooking Loch Ness from a misty vantage point. We’ve created a short run of cassette tapes to tie in with the retro, lo-fi theme and the tape itself is neon yellow; a flash of colour as a stamp optimism.

‘If This Were My Body’ (releasing on Lost Tribe Sound) is the first album from Canadian experimental cellist and composer Adrian Copeland under his given name. Some may be familiar with Copeland’s body of work as Alder & Ash. While the project has garnered attention from a wide range of musical communities ranging from metal to classical, the decision to release the new record apart from the works of his alias make sense. Though Copeland remains committed to the cello as the primary and only sound source, its an internal shift that has played the biggest part in shaping this album.

"If the music I wrote was my body, how would I use it to tell stories? Would I fight with others, would I hurt myself, would I yell or would I cry? On this album, I wanted to reclaim my body as an instrument of gentleness and love. Too often, the male body is objectified as a tool of violence and hate, and we don't often have the chance to learn what it means to love as men. My own relationship with my body is marked with bitterness, self hatred, and shame. This album "If This Were My Body" is an unlearning of all the violence I've inflicted and all the violence that's been inflicted on me. It's a celebration of another way of being, one of vulnerability and tenderness.

There is a triumph here that doesn't exist on my previous albums. There are moments of sadness and intensity, but it's overwhelmingly an album about love, specifically self love. During this period I was undergoing a period of transformation and relearning my relationship to myself, my work, and most importantly, my body. I wanted to release this album under my own name, as it felt more vulnerable to do so. There is no artifice to hide my emotions”

Veil on Veil (out November 20th on Lost Tribe Sound) is the fourth album from experimental act, Several Wives. Veil on Veil continues the deeply cathartic explorations into doom, electro-acoustic, and outsider classical that have become synonymous with their work.

Several Wives is undoubtedly the most enigmatic artist Lost Tribe Sound has attempted to pair words with. The more one struggles to describe it, the more it evades. Words like dark, sinister, disturbing only seem to address a surface understanding of the dynamics at play, as with each listen new emotions are revealed like half-remembered days of a haunted childhood.

Veil on Veil presents an amorphous sound, somewhere between a solid and liquid. Depending on your mood going in, it can take you down various pathways (like when your friend told you, stay positive and this trip won’t turn sour). This is music that heavily invites a narrative without being beholden to it. It finds just as much satisfaction bathing in its own filth as it does bringing its believers to the light. It’s music made of dungeonous booms and clatter exquisitely paired with sepia-toned strings and other cloaked sonics.

Here at Lost Tribe Sound, Several Wives have made a huge impact on our musical taste since first discovering the release, Göldi Fell. It has led us down the rabbit hole to all sorts of ritual music, minimal rhythmic ambient, cult film soundtracks, and various other lost compositions. Having now spent days listening to works of Several Wives, what remains is perhaps the music’s most curious property. For all the exchange between the darkness and the light brought on by these mood-heavy formations, the line between the two now feels more blurred than ever, and that may be its best illusion of all.
