In this interview we hear from Chris Gusen of 350.org in Canada speaking about possibilities of climate justice victories within the context of a minority Liberal government. This interview presses on the important of sustained and committed grassroots action around challenging the great distance between the political rhetoric of the Liberal Party around the climate and their support for corporate oil and gas pipelines being built on Indigenous lands, like the Coastal GasLink pipeline on Wet'suwet'en land. 

In this interview, Chris specifically speaks on the political rhetoric deployed by Justin Trudeau during the last Federal election around a "just transition," from fossil fuels, and the urgent need to see that rhetoric translate into actual policy.

Seabuckthorn - Hand In The Upward Sky

Ian Hawgood and James Murray began Slow Reels in 2018 from studios in London and Warsaw. The early work involved exchanging heavily modulated long-form textures, recorded on a variety of instruments, notably vintage synths. Reiterative digital manipulations and successive destructive passes through an end-of-life reel-to-reel tape setup resulted in a collection of entirely unrepeatable drone suites.

Their debut Farewell Islands for Morr Music was met with widespread critical acclaim. Sustain, presented now by Fluid Audio, extends the force of this uncompromising aesthetic further, as the artists’ shared medium further degenerates into overwhelming, full-frequency emotion.

An international mix of soundscapes, poetry, music, spoken reflections and sounds of solidarity demonstrations from around the world. The sounds on this transmission express support for the Palestinian people and the Palestinian struggle for freedom. 

As Gaza continues to face deadly bombardment at the hands of the Israeli state, it is more crucial than ever to raise our voices together around the world to not only demand an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, but to call for justice in Palestine more generally. In the cultural and music world this means cutting links to Israeli state backed cultural institutions. Now it is as critical as ever to learn about the intergenerational struggle for freedom in Palestine, an anti-colonial struggle that finds a sister struggle in the South African struggle against apartheid. 

A note to say that all the music, protest sounds, poems, mixtapes and sounds in this broadcast are included with permission. It has been great to work with people all over the Earth to bring together this material.

William Ryan Fritch returns with his brand new full-length album on Lost Tribe Sound, a hard-fought and highly personal one, entitled, ’Behind The Pale.’ It is a stirring and profoundly beautiful rendering of a very trying time in Fritch’s life, one filled with uncertainty, vulnerability, hope and strained resolve. It’s the kind of narrative that outside explanations often make light of, become too superfluous with, or fall short of giving true meaning to.  Like all good art, it does its best to translate complex, abstract emotions into palpable and compelling expression. This album, given Fritch's vast and varied musical talents, evades easy stylistic and genre classification; so we’d prefer to set the scene with words from Fritch himself.

"It was early November, I had Behind The Pale all but finished. Ryan (the owner of Lost Tribe Sound) was pressing me to hurry and finish before the baby was born. I had time... I really didn’t want to rush it out after the craziness of the subscription series we had just run, that saw me release 13 albums in just under 18 months and the end of February was still months away. However, my daughter couldn’t wait until then. Three months before her due date she arrived.

When uncertainty is most dense, all your awareness and energy go to simply navigating along a freshly obscured path. When my daughter was born more than three months early, My wife and I did just that for countless days and weeks until we could finally bring our child home. All the time we’d envisioned to prepare for life as parents and finish our laundry list of passion projects etc. was a mirage. The ecstatic and cataclysmic personal event of having a child was thrust upon us sooner than we could have imagined. Blinded by the radiance of the limitless love and the enveloping clouds of abject fear there are no senses that are attuned to guide you but the ones that say simply “Onward!”

Behind the Pale was written across the two most transformative events in my life (and not nearly as adjacent as I would have hoped); my daughter being born and finally bringing her home.

On side A of the record, the disorientation and worry is palpable. The simple, plaintive thrum of these song’s rhythms weather flurries and swells of irrepressible intensity.  These euphoric bursts and  undiluted emotional swells offer transient flashes of light and clarity before settling back into the soft-focus of doubt. Tape saturation blurs and warps the edges of clear confident sounds and gives unnatural weight and musicality to the whispers and creaks of barely functioning instruments. So many colors cancelling each other out. They pool together into hauntingly beautiful grey abstractions.

On side B, songs of wounded but assured hopefulness peak through the fog of unknowing. Intimacy takes hold of the words and the instrumentation is closer now than before. Light permeates many obscured things. Much remains uncertain, but in the small moments basking in the untainted love and goodness of your child, the future for the first time seems undimmed."

VINYL & CD DETAILS
Behind The Pale was given the deluxe vinyl treatment. The edition arrives as a lacquer cut 180 gram 12" audiophile black vinyl, housed in a matte finished gatefold tip-on jacket (Limited to 300). Plated at RTI, pressed at Gotta Groove, the vinyl edition also comes with a download card offering a choice of formats including WAV, FLAC, 320K MP3, etc. Mastering for vinyl, CD and digital was performed by Samur Khouja at Seahorse Sound Studios. The CD edition is housed in a heavy stock, handcrafted 7" x 5" book-style case with glass mastered CD and a download of the album in high quality format (Limited to 150).
