Republic of Korea usually called South Korea, is a democratic state in East Asia. The country occupies the southern part of the Korean Peninsula. Totalitarian North Korea, which is largely isolated internationally, has regularly threatened to use nuclear weapons against South Korea in recent years, with great attention from the world public. Due to the general threat from North Korea, South Korea has one of the largest armed forces in the world in terms of the number of soldiers.

The country was completely destroyed by the Korean War and became one of the poorest in the world. From 1962 onwards there was a rapid economic upswing. The “Miracle on the Han River” transformed South Korea from a poor agricultural country into a highly modern, rich industrial state (“Tiger State”) within just a few decades. South Korean industry dominates the global market, especially in the production of ships and electronic products (such as semiconductors, microchips, flat screens and computers). South Korea is a member of several international economic organizations, e.g. B. the G20, the OECD, the APEC and ASEAN+3.
