Composed in 1830 and published in 1870, Chopin dedicated this work to his sister, Ludwika: "To my sister Ludwika as an exercise before beginning the study of my second Concerto".

The piece was famously played by Holocaust survivor Natalia Karp for the Nazi concentration camp commandant Amon Goeth, with Goeth being so impressed with the rendition, that he spared Karp's life.

The Nocturne is featured in the 2002 historical drama film 'The Pianist', and a violin version is featured in the 2010 action drama film 'The Karate Kid'.  Alicia Keys samples the Nocturne in 'As I Am', from her 2007 album of the same name.
