New York City's Jennifer Vanilla, aka Jennifer Vanilla and Brian Abelson, offered a portal into a colorful world of innovative electronic sound with their 2022 debut album ‘Castle In The Sky’, traversing new wave, post-punk, art pop, and experimental R&B. Now Love Injection, the multi-faceted brainchild of Barbie Bertisch and Paul Raffaele comprising a print magazine, radio show, record label, and production duo breathe new life into one of the album’s standout tracks ‘Jennifer Pastoral’ on home turf, in the form of a 12” single alongside two ethereal mixes featuring maestros Dave Darlington on mixing duties and Francois Kevorkian as mastering engineer.

Love Injection's Earthly Mix of ‘Jennifer Pastoral’ is a sublime seven-minute deep house odyssey with neon keys from ‘Conclave’ frontman and close friend Toribio and a sprinkling of organic percussion that harks back to the likes of François K and Pal Joey but with Vanilla's sensuous vocals soaring up top. The duo’s Celestial Mix of ‘Jennifer Pastoral’ is more of a late-night lullaby - a soothing comedown with widescreen pads and layers of percussion that bubble along on expansive synths. The original version of 'Jennifer Pastoral' is a freewheeling electronic rhythm reminiscent of Will Powers with robust drums but funky riffs, lavish pop vocals and cosmic warmth.

When Cesar sings, “It presents itself so naturally” on “Relax” he may well have been describing Jenifa Mayanja’s “Relax (Remix).” A study in the strength of subtlety, it stays predominantly faithful to the song’s original structure. But Mayanja cleverly reworks the underlying rhythms in stuttering fashion and peels back keyboard layers to reveal moments in dub where her gorgeous counter melodies – in the guise of vocals and synth – revel.

Assigned with the task of reshaping one of Conclave’s most kinetic tracks, Love Injection Fanzine/Records extended family members Craig Handfield and Brandon Weems of musclecars’s “Alati Yeye Chege (Remix)” shrewdly emphasizes the soulful intimacy at the heart of the original. Gradually building from congas, the duo unfurls a joyous and percolating four-on-the-floor groove, piano and synth lines nimbly darting about Cesar’s layered vocals with the finesse of the dancers it will surely inspire. Best of all, though, is a surprise false ending that gives way to an exhilarating coda – an eruption of percussion and flute that closes out the track.

Photay’s “All That I Need (Remix)” brilliantly sets the tone. Anchored by an irresistibly syncopated percussive line, it accumulates perfectly placed rhythmic layers and accents, then drops in Cesar and sister Sharin Toribio’s sparse vocals amidst touches of haunting modulating organ and Bernie Worrell-esque synth squeals, all while largely dispensing with traditional basslines. It’s an intoxicatingly moody (re-)arrangement, reflective of Photay’s uncanny ability to generate momentum and evoke stillness at once. And it’s reprised in a more stripped down iteration for his lovely Photay Lullaby Remix, which dials back the percussion and plays up a simple thumb piano melody from the song’s beautifully bridge for maximum emotional resonance.

Conclave’s self-titled debut has been hailed as one of 2021’s best, described as “magnificent” by Resident Advisor, “a vibrant house album that beautifully celebrates rhythms, collaboration and musical history.” The brainchild of New York City-based vocalist, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Cesar Toribio, it is that rarity in dance music: a conceptual project that never lets ideation (specifically, a celebration of the Afro-Latin clave rhythm as a transcendent musical key) impede its primary motive of putting bodies in motion.

Because of our weekly 2-hour radio show, making and releasing mixes is something we don't get around to often. They tend to require too much energy and often end up feeling ephemeral, a drop in a bucket that's already full to the brim.

This 5.5 hour mix is a live recording from us, Paul Raffaele & Barbie Bertisch, DJing at 718 Sessions on Sunday November 21, 2021, a gig we recently played that meant a lot to us. Benny Soto and Danny Krivit will celebrate their 19th anniversary next week and the party has long served as a beacon of light in our world: a place to learn, be with chosen family, release the pressure and experience joy.

This lineup was originally booked for March 22, 2020 but it was cancelled due to COVID. Luckily, the same lineup was revived for the party's return to indoor dancing, taking place at Good Room in Brooklyn. This night was particularly special because it was the first time we would play 718 Sessions, our favorite party, as a duo.

In a pivot from what one might expect from our sets, we made a conscious effort not to play any Garage or Loft classics to widen the musical offering of the party and avoid overlap with Danny in the main room. Some mixes are great, some aren't, but in a bit of a protest to today's world digital perfection, we've kept it all in there and serves as a record for one of our favorite nights DJing together ever.

We recorded line in from the mixer but also the sounds of the room, blending music and crowd together and resulting in what you'll hear throughout the mix. It's an effort to capture some of the room's energy and not just a collection of songs one after the other.

Our style is representative of an amalgamation of the DJs we grew up listening to and studying, most intensely: Joaquin 'Joe' Claussell, François Kevorkian, Danny Krivit, Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy, Louie Vega, Dope Jams, Theo Parrish, but there are many more. Thank you for the inspiration.

Love Injection is the label and fanzine Bertisch runs with her partner, Paul Raffaele. The duo are romantic about remixes as an artform and always intended to have reinterpretations be the next phase after Prelude. Often reduced to ways to extend a hype cycle, or disjointed add-ons, Love injection’s remixes exist in dialogue with the artist’s songs.

This is Douglas Sherman. He is the musical selector of the modern reincarnation of The Loft that David Mancuso started back in February of 1970. Paul Raffaele and Barbie Bertisch interviewed Douglas for a very special edition of ‪#‎LoveInjection‬ radio show. In hour one, you'll hear the records Doug inspired and excited him growing up, including a one-off acetate of his parents singing a duet (!!!). In hour two we get into the records that meant the most to him in the context of The Loft with examples of David's theory on building up and bringing down a night of music. Son of jazz legend Johnny “Hammond’ Smith and singer Sonja Brown, BEAST621 aka “The Mad Monk of Mixing” was raised in the Bronx and exposed to all music genres from a very young age. As a teenager in the ‘80s, he patronized the Bronx Community Centers, the block and house parties, and the park jams where Hip Hop pioneers like Grand Master flash and the Furious 5, Kool Herc and the Herculoids, and Grand Wizard Theodore were making names for themselves. 

He saved up his earnings from a summer job at Pony Sports to purchase DJ equipment, built his own speakers, and started collecting music from there on, initially focusing on drum breaks. He went by the name of  “Grand Master Cool C”. As Hip Hop started to evolve, so did he. Hearing for the first time Larry Levan play on the Richard Long sound system at the Paradise Garage changed his perspective. Full songs were played, not just the break. From there on, his scratches and cuts grew into disco style blends. Lexxx “the listening experience” became his new musical nom de plume and his creative mixes were blends of music, sounds, and movie clips. 

Simultaneously, he was working security at NY clubs and afterhours. After hearing his maestro Timmy Regisford play one night, the Shelter became his home. The name “BEAST” stuck to him as he freely unleashed his love for the music. Often the first one at the club and the last to leave, he became a staple at Shelter. He’d sometimes worked the lights with Lil’ Ray and Ben Johnson. The name BEAST621 combines his strongest positive influences in life: The Shelter and his daughter’s birthday. His motto: “Find yourself before you can let yourself go!”

He has played parties alongside soulful house legends such as DJ Disciple, Spinna, Jellybean Benitez, Tyrone Francis, Adam Rios, Kim Lightfoot, Kalim Shabbazz, and many more.

Conclave is Cesar Toribio and Scott Scribner, multi-instrumentalists whose alchemy is evident in the ebb and flow of their compositions, paradoxes of the delicate and powerful inextricably woven around the rhythm.

After a dozen live shows over the past couple years, the Brooklyn-based group take their first steps on vinyl with an impassioned cover of the soul standard “Sunny,” a song whose Latin Disco pedigree makes it the perfect canvas for the Dominican+New Yorker collaborators. An ethereal gospel choir lifts Toribio’s heartfelt vocals over twining guitar and keys that gradually build and eventually bubble over to ride a churning bass line into the heavens — Paradise, in this case, being a funked-up extended instrumental jam on the groove.

Seven Davis Jr. joins the circle for a flip side remix that is nothing short of stunning. Languidly paced, the sparse mix gradually grows in intensity with an unforced charm that lends a startling drama to the entrance of the rippling bassline a full three minutes in. When the keys finally arrive like a burst of light thru the clouds, the door to the dance has been fully thrown open and the listener’s transformation from bystander to part of the conclave is complete.

The release of “Sunny” is rounded out with an acapella, available on vinyl and digital, an enticement for future collaborators, perhaps. Conclave’s debut album will touch down summer 2020, but this Most Excellent 12-inch is certain to hold you over till then, and beyond.
