Lovejoy is a celebration of the people, culture & communities around us as much as it is the music we love.

We’re so pleased to curate the second instalment of COMMUNIONS, spanning a huge 14 tracks from artists from all over so-called-Australia. Moving through all the sounds & moods that both our local & national scenes have become known for, we’re so pleased to platform a series of incredible producers that are hometown heroes no matter where they call home.

It’s this energy, sense of community & love for what makes this music so special that has us more excited than ever to release this into the world.

This is a small snapshot of where our scene is at, where we are headed, & what we come together for.

It’s this sense of community that has us so thankful, & so heartbroken, for what we are seeing overseas. The Israeli genocide in Palestine is an issue that none of us can in our right minds turn away from.

Dance, & dance music, is an inherently political space.

So then, it felt appropriate for us to donate 100% of the profits from this release to Palestine Australia Relief & Action, & the wonderful work that they’re doing for Palestinian migrants and refugees. Our profits will assist them in seeking safety in so-called-Australia, and achieving their full potential, free from the barriers created by conflict and displacement.

This is a collection of songs from 2021-2023 that I wish I had released much closer to when I made them.
Listening back to these songs, I can see foolish and overly sentimental person that made them. I still pretty much am that that person, just a little older, tireder & wiser (kind of). My tastes have changed over the years & while a few of these songs don’t feel entirely relevant anymore, they are infused with an undeniable naivety that I don’t think I could recreate. Nothing is ever finished and the differences between version 7 and 52 of a song are often trivial. Producing well is the culmination of thousands of little details that almost nobody else will notice, but you can’t keep polishing the same thing forever.

A common theme among many of these songs is that I have tried to fit far too much into them and this tradition will continue into the words that accompany this release.

These songs transport me back to the many places they were made in as I explored, looking for a home. I can see all the faces that made those times. Eternal thanks to everyone who I’ve met along the way. I hope this music does for some of you what so much other music has done for me.

'Nan & Pop' is the debut release from Sydney producer, Morgan Huggins. Clocking in at nine minutes, the track is an ode to his grandparents that takes us through their life in the country, set to the tune of an emotive dancefloor. 

Purple Sneaker's Emma Jones said of the track, "taking you on a sonic odyssey, he creates an arresting but delicate soundscape, and with a thumping beat, acid synths, blooming and swelling atmospherics and samples of birds and water to ensure a strong connection to the outside world, ‘Nan & Pop’ is uplifting, nostalgic and glowing from the very first second. Huggins uses restraint and precision to invite you into an emotive, heartfelt and genuine moment, and a journey you’ll want to go on again and again."

"I wrote this song while visiting my grandparents for a week in Forster, a coastal town they retired to after a full life in the country. Usually when I see them, it’s mixed up with the excitement of seeing my whole family, but this time it was just me and them, and we spent hours talking each day. They told me all the stories I had heard before, but I also got to hear new ones that I had no idea about, and for the first time in my life I got a sense of how many people they had helped along the way.

Nan was a primary school teacher, and she witnessed the effect that the stolen generation had on the indigenous children first hand, doing everything she could to make them feel safe in a country that was immeasurably cruel to them, but never enough. She went on to start a school for disabled students, where she was the only teacher for 10 years. She smiled as she remembered the young and bright faces of yesteryear’s students, remembering the good while recognising the injustice in the world.

Everything had a beautiful sense of nostalgia, and every night after they went to bed I stayed up and made music in the afterglow. They have been together for a long time, and it shows when they talk, as they butt in over each other and bicker about the silliest details, and that really influenced the way all the melodies interact with each other. One day I hope to look back as they do."
