After releasing his first single In Orbit in 2020, Irish producer Lukeozade returns with his debut EP, Moral Mirage; more rhythmically complex and heavier than the transcendent, minimal/deep house sounds of In Orbit. 

In Moral Mirage a fusion of genres can be heard. The EP transports the listener, aurally moving them east to west as the music departs from The Ney Track and transitions towards western club sounds. The ney flute and North African rhythms are replaced with off-beat Hi Hats and playful basslines. 

Lukeozade continues to explore his love for sound design and unique sounding electronic music, paying tribute to his influences on the way.

The formerly Miami-based record label Loveless Records spent it’s formative years issuing early US Bass music, furthering binding it to the long, storied history of regional club music. While last year’s move to New York City saw the label adopt refined House music as its core identity, the countless Loveless parties maintained its fervent support for experimental club & bass. 

To give that a proper avenue, Loveless has announced a new sub-label called MATERIA, where all forms of regional club music can mesh and grow wild. The first release is an apt summary of the mission statement, featuring two contrasting singles from Brooklyn producer JX Cannon. TANKED plays the heart strings of casual and obsessive Anime fans everywhere with a crushing DJ tool take on the quintessential theme to Cowboy Bebop. GAGGED, on the flip, introduces classic Gabber to the shady world of Ballroom in the most brutal means available.

On remix duty, Philly-based DISCWOMAN affiliate DJ Haram gives TANKED room to breath, cutting it down to an ambient percussive exercise with lofty amounts of negative space and distant motif abstractions. Vogue/Ballroom staple Byrell The Great deconstructed GAGGED, syphoning out the Gabber and making it a full-on Ballroom anthem of shade.

Roaches, the second release on Loveless Records new club imprint Materia, is a collaborative EP between Rozay LaBeija and Celestral Trax, and is a call to arms for femininity and sisterhood; the battle for powerful expression amidst social constructs. With special guest verses from the likes of Dai Burger and Keijaun Thomas, the new EP represents the future of hip-hop. The aggressive anthems pair Rozay's ferocious ballroom-inflected vocals with the complex beats of Brooklyn-based Celestrial Trax. "It's a prison pipeline, gotta beat the odds / I made it past twenty one, n*gga I'm a God," Rozay chants in solidarity, empowering his sisters who are fighting to stay alive.

Fresh off of a European tour with Juke Bounce Werk mainstays Kush Jones and Swisha, Bronx native DJ & producer Bassbear (Reynaldo Hernandez) aligns with Loveless Records’ Club Music focused sublabel Materia for his first official solo release. With 5 originals, “Under Pressure EP” is a beautiful demonstration of finely-tuned club music from a producer who is 1/2 of Club/Grime/Footwork hybrid outfit OSOBLANCO with fellow Bronx native EL BLANCO NINO and a frequently collaborator with fellow Bronx producers Los, Scatta, & Bojaq.

With no time for delicate intros, Bassbear kicks off right away with an ominous low-end club track “Step Child,” featuring perfectly complimentary vocals from Queens rapper & poet GETOVERHER. Following is the Swisha collaboration “Dancefloor Jam,” featuring addictive elements of UK Funky and classic UK Rave stabs built into a traditional US club track. Middle track “Speed Limit” can’t sit still with a menagerie of rhythmic Club patterns topped with iconic Grime clicks and snares. “Perfect Dance” and “Grease Mode” call upon a 90s club aesthetic for deceptively simple DJ tools while the latter invokes Ballroom vocals. 

For a bonus, Sweaty Equity bossman JX Cannon (and first MATERIA artist) flips “Dancefloor Jam” into a dark, tribal meditation with hints of French Electro synth work. Long term Loveless Records affiliate Kala concludes the EP with a half-time UK version of “Perfect Dance”

“Under Pressure” by Bassbear will be available on Friday, October 13th through all digital stores and streaming services.

Rachika S is a Brooklyn-based producer who draws on genres spanning ambient, contemporary classical, shoegaze, and more. Using various electronic processing techniques, she explores latent qualities of acoustic instruments including cello, guitar, and piano, juxtaposed with the artifacts present in digital apparatuses. 

The forthcoming EP, Themes for a Film, is inspired by music Rachika S originally wrote for a Loveless Records re-scoring of cult-classic anime Tekkonkinkreet. Pulling together threads of ambient-electronic, shoegaze, darkwave and more, the EP's dramatic, expansive emotional arc resembles that of cinematic narrative excavated of character and plot.

With the bloom of spring on the horizon, Oakland-based multidisciplinary artist Bored Lord (real name Daria Lourd) teams up with Brooklyn’s Loveless Records to present her debut vinyl release Cybernetic Romance, available starting March 23.

Written during the spring of 2019 with the intention of “stirring queer romance on the dancefloor” the club-ready record features three seductive anthems from the prolific producer and remixer alongside a chilled out remix from Discwoman’s student.

Known for sound tracking countless late night raves worldwide, the Memphis-born artist cut her teeth in her hometown with the Rare Nnudes collective before joining the DIY rave scene in Oakland, California as part of the Trash Cvlt collective, releasing nearly a dozen projects between 2013 and 2017. With a short stint in Los Angeles before going back to Oakland in 2020, Daria joined forces with the Knightwerk imprint and released 2018’s Who Is She? EP followed by her critically acclaimed 2019 album Transexual Rave Hymns. Described as a “meditative, spiritual approach to dance music” the album framed the monolith of Club music in a striking duality in which introspection is no longer antithetical to propulsive rhythms meant to move bodies, but entirely necessary.

Cybernetic Romance carries that mission forward, taking with confidence the tried and true concepts of Club music and giving it the kind of work out that only someone truly fluent in the language could. All three originals wrap familiar vocal samples and hypnotic broken rhythms in warm pads and subtle atmospheric licks, giving it both utility and depth. Rounded out in true rave fashion, Queen’s based educator and multi-instrumentalist stud1nt delivers a 93 BPM house remix that gentle wanders along, perfectly suited for the side room and post-rave comedowns.

“Cybernetic Romance” by Bored Lord is available starting 20 March 2020 from Loveless Records on limited edition 12” vinyl (via Lobster Distribution) and from all digital outlets.
