Love Love continues the LOVLTD series with a follow up from Bristol based producer Ben Pest. In a similar vein to his previous 12" on Love Love, ‘On The Three’, it’s an all out techno affair with 4 high powered tracks geared for destroying dancefloors.

Eponymous track ‘Cancel Couture’ is driven by a hard four to the floor kick and thick squelchy acid line with a percussion workout for maximum groove while ‘My First Rodeo’ is a tearing stomper of a track, reminiscent of 90’s warehouse hard techno with huge sub bass pounding in an off-kilter rhythm.

The flip-side kicks off with ‘PP Breaks’ which, as its name might suggest, is a breakbeat track with a particularly rubbery electro bassline and hard snare, providing an elastic party experience.

Track 4 is ‘Bad B’ which provides a raucous highlight to the EP - A rough chunky acid hardware jam with deep bass and rich drum machine rhythms, adorned with stuttering fills and a tidy 303 that bleeds tightly in the mix.

With a career spanning over two decades, Christoph De Babalon has consistently created music that stands apart from contemporaneous trends. Early 12”s such as ‘Destroy Berlin!’ on Alec Empire’s Digital Hardcore Recordings (DHR) and ‘We Declare War’ on his own Cross Fader Enter Tainment (CFET) outlet first presented his cathartic brand of noise-orientated drum & bass and his isolationist tendencies, with extensive support from the late John Peel and Thom Yorke helping Christoph achieve somewhat of an outsider-status. More recently his ability to remain separated from specific spheres of influence has allowed him to deliver uncompromising releases like the mutated conceptual album ‘Scylla & Charybdis’, as well as his diverse 2012 album ‘A Bond With Sorrow’ on Tigerbeat6, marking a departure from the chaotic flurries he was perhaps previously more known for.

‘Short Eternities’ sees Christoph once again exploring the abrasive nature of his earlier work whilst maintaining throughout the album a level of measured assuredness not often seen in this area of music. Album opener ‘Barely You’ serves as a powerful message of intent interlacing a fractured drum break with tense horror tones, whereas detailed ambient atmospheres such as those in ‘Wait For Me’ and ‘It’s Returning’ alongside the hypnotic rumblings of ‘Home is Here’ and ‘Bad Dreamer’ break apart the extremities of the album, providing an opiated atmosphere within which the album swims around. This cinematic presentation allows for a far greater impact when the climactic ‘Haunting Past’ finally hits home with its finely-tuned blend of jarring distortion and moody surroundings, followed hastily by the twisted drum breaks and writhing bass-line of ‘Fairreality’. Christoph touches upon a rich shadowy darkness akin to a handful of contemporaries such as Demdike Stare and Vatican Shadow but with a vigour that captures the anarchic spirit of early breakcore. It is the explorative and ritualistic nature of his method, combining paradoxical feelings of euphoria, introversion and explosive aggression, which truly makes Christoph’s music so compelling.

Rhythm Magnet is the debut release by the all-purpose sonic LSD vehicle Acid Jeep, broadcasting high grade machine-made acid worldwide from the scorching metropolis of Houston, Texas. 

This squelchy warehouse material is characterised by chunky acid grooves and hypnotic lead lines, moving through 7 tracks of pounding hyper-dynamic rhythms and curling bleeps’n’bass made using an array of hardware. Despite utilising a sound palette that will be familiar to most ravers and braindancers, Acid Jeep is able to take dancefloors to previously unknown destinations with his fresh take on a style that, whilst pulling influences rooted in Detroit, has been more euro-centric over the years.

Jonathan Valentine returns to Love Love after a decade with some serious goods, presenting us with an elaborate affair of hard ear magic. With space to move around over the full length of this album Chevron explores a dynamic range of acid flecked stylings from bedtime electro to soothing robot funk. A woozy outing, synths abound with vintage flavours, half remembered feelings and angled visions forming a fully fledged journey. Spinning loops, lazy swagger and mercurial ear slugs. This is the morning after, slipping in and out of sleep state, the glow stick in the footwell, the smelly bean bag you can’t get up from, the swimming hillsides.

A collection that is both cohesive and wandering, the chunky jams found within demand the attention of the listener while running away from them. Mr Valentine's output has always broadened horizons building different sonic landscapes with each release but with this album he has taken a 360° jump-flip into full-on subterranean tropical wilderness.
