A very special mini-album from one of our old favourites, originally released on the internet as 2 separate E.P’s back in 2009 and 2010, this self-titled album presents a charged array of spaced-out alt-rock from one man band, Beastmaster. After working with Brighton’s 'Wrong Music' under a different pseudonym way back in 2006, Beastmaster moved to Australia for a change of pace. Recording half of the album whilst playing with alt-rock band 'Piano Donkey' in Perth, he later borrowed instruments and recording equipment to create this little beauty in his back room. The rest of the album was recorded when he returned to the UK and has now been revived in CD form alongside a very limited A1 poster.

This entirely instrumental album takes us on a sunny, kaleidoscopic jaunt via a refined strain of space rock, psychedelia and grungey pop – laced with hints of shoegazey melancholia. Preferring to work without vocals, Beastmaster rather uses this space to create a greater sense of complexity in the development of the tracks themselves, carving naturally flowing narratives in each song. Serving up a timeless balance between hazy post-rock and retro-futuristic pop, as well as interweaving a multitude of references to past greats, Beastmaster has achieved a wonderfully detailed fresh sound devoid of easy categorisation.

The opening track 'Demented Grandson...' delivers a spangled journey that flits between glittering organ-led sequences and mutated sabbath riffs, before solidifying into the shimmering, delay-driven wanderings of 'Goathead'. The album continues to move through this scorching landscape, the tracks acting as hallucinatory mirages twisting and turning organically towards the peak of the experience - 'The Iron Pig'. Commencing with an eery krautrock feel this monolith of a track quickly transforms into a fantastical space-western of epic proportions, with waves of guitar licks lifting the track into higher planes as Beastmaster rallies all aspects of his arsenal.

Love Love continues the LOVLTD series with a follow up from Bristol based producer Ben Pest. In a similar vein to his previous 12" on Love Love, ‘On The Three’, it’s an all out techno affair with 4 high powered tracks geared for destroying dancefloors.

Eponymous track ‘Cancel Couture’ is driven by a hard four to the floor kick and thick squelchy acid line with a percussion workout for maximum groove while ‘My First Rodeo’ is a tearing stomper of a track, reminiscent of 90’s warehouse hard techno with huge sub bass pounding in an off-kilter rhythm.

The flip-side kicks off with ‘PP Breaks’ which, as its name might suggest, is a breakbeat track with a particularly rubbery electro bassline and hard snare, providing an elastic party experience.

Track 4 is ‘Bad B’ which provides a raucous highlight to the EP - A rough chunky acid hardware jam with deep bass and rich drum machine rhythms, adorned with stuttering fills and a tidy 303 that bleeds tightly in the mix.

Rhythm Magnet is the debut release by the all-purpose sonic LSD vehicle Acid Jeep, broadcasting high grade machine-made acid worldwide from the scorching metropolis of Houston, Texas. 

This squelchy warehouse material is characterised by chunky acid grooves and hypnotic lead lines, moving through 7 tracks of pounding hyper-dynamic rhythms and curling bleeps’n’bass made using an array of hardware. Despite utilising a sound palette that will be familiar to most ravers and braindancers, Acid Jeep is able to take dancefloors to previously unknown destinations with his fresh take on a style that, whilst pulling influences rooted in Detroit, has been more euro-centric over the years.

Having been an influence on Love Love during its infancy, Arizona based sonic meddler Terminal 11 is welcomed into the fold and not a moment too soon. Maintaining an overall extra-terrestrial form he explores the limits of FM synthesis, dynamics and poly-rhythms achieving what can only be described as a wholly individual sound. Despite the alien exterior, found within this release is a real humanity that emerges from between the sharp fragments of percussive noise and glistening dissonant melodies.

Jonathan Valentine returns to Love Love after a decade with some serious goods, presenting us with an elaborate affair of hard ear magic. With space to move around over the full length of this album Chevron explores a dynamic range of acid flecked stylings from bedtime electro to soothing robot funk. A woozy outing, synths abound with vintage flavours, half remembered feelings and angled visions forming a fully fledged journey. Spinning loops, lazy swagger and mercurial ear slugs. This is the morning after, slipping in and out of sleep state, the glow stick in the footwell, the smelly bean bag you can’t get up from, the swimming hillsides.

A collection that is both cohesive and wandering, the chunky jams found within demand the attention of the listener while running away from them. Mr Valentine's output has always broadened horizons building different sonic landscapes with each release but with this album he has taken a 360° jump-flip into full-on subterranean tropical wilderness.
