Oli Stewart aka Casbah73 is our very special guest for the 22nd episode in our Curtis Radio "10 songs" series. Born in NYC and based in Madrid, he moved to the UK in the 90s where his DJ game was enriched and solidified when he got immersed in the flourishing rare groove, soul, funk, disco and house musical scene. His quest as a voracious digger and professional record dealer takes him around the world in search of the rarest, most elusive and precious slices of wax. As a result his collection grows to monumental proportions. Back to Madrid in the year 2000 he puts all his knowledge and experience to work both in DJ booths and the recording studios, achieving an original and very distinctive Casbah 73 sound and producing a string of high quality releases for labels like Lovemonk, Hitop, Glitterbox/Defected...Picking up only 10 songs out of a 18000 collection must be a big challenge. 'Monsieur Dimitri from Paris works his magic on Casbah 73’s organic disco grooves with a remix treatment that surpasses all expectations.

‘To Be Free’ and ‘Doing Our Own Thing’ had a fantastic response when released on 12”, at the end of 2019.  It received wide support from people in the know like Red Greg, Danny Krivit, Folamour, Soul Clap, Kenny Dope and many others. The first pressing quickly sold out and the tracks were sounding strong on discerning dancefloors until, well, “The Thing” hit and everything stopped.

Despite this, the record has continued to grow by word of mouth, and so we thought it would be wonderful to have a 7” version with an edit or even a remix of the jazzy funky disco banger ‘Doing Our Own Thing’. No one better than Dimitri from Paris for the job, one of the DJs who happened to tell us he loved the track. His two-part edit of ‘Doing Our Own Thing’ is a bomb that will make people dance for years to come.

The original track features a phenomenal line-up of musicians, including strings, brass, percussion, vocals and whatnot. While preparing the stems for Dimitri to remix, Oli was surprised by the incredible amount of material he had from those recording sessions. He discovered some wicked takes that didn’t make it into the original mix and used this opportunity to create two new versions of ‘To Be Free’, both of which retain the organic groove of the original while adding new elements and a decisive turn towards the dancefloor.

Together with Dimitri’s remixes, these two tracks will make up the digital package, and it’s a must-have for fans of organic disco grooves with a housey attitude.'

Lovemonk is a small but very sunny and eclectic label from Madrid. When it comes to put an, err, label on the label’s sound things become complicated. In times when everybody seems to be specialising in something, Lovemonk touches a lot of styles, and many different styles at that. 

Its artists cover a wide range of styles from the most club-oriented electronica to the prettiest folk, with everything in between, although the most common sounds in our catalogue come from black roots.

Everything fits under the motto, “Discos Buenos.”
