Living up to its name: this mix goes just about everywhere and does just about everything. These days, I’m feeling a little calmer and more of a creature of (new) habit(s). So I wanted to give y’all one last chaotic treat for a while before approaching mixes with a more focused approach in terms of genre later throughout 2024 🫂

2023 felt like three separate years. First Europe tour, first time scoring a documentary, shows around the country, heartbreak, a new kind of love, new friendships, losing all my music, & a life changing medical procedure. Many times it felt back to back life altering events- with “keep going” written down in my journal for about every month. This mix is a lil taste of that spiral.

This month’s Carhartt WIP Radio show features the New York-based producer, singer-songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist @keiyaa. 

Born and raised on Chicago’s South Side, keiyaA grew up singing in the Chicago Children's Choir, before studying the alto saxophone. Today, she combines her jazz training with stirring vocals and neo-soul sensibilities to create richly textured, yet introspective music. Her sound touches r&b, hip hop, and jazz, while also venturing into IDM, ambient, and experimental realms. 

For this episode of Carhartt WIP Radio, keiyaA has created a mix that features unreleased music, remixes and collaborative works, creating a deep, spiritual flow of experimental grooves, bouncy bass lines, and fourth-world rhythms, all combined with her signature mix of song, rap, spoken word.

Carhartt WIP Radio April 2024: keiyaA

This episode is an audio collage celebrating Richmond, VA's hip-hop lineage and hip-hop as time travel. Lovenloops (aka Blair Smith) is a kindred spirit, archivist, and dope producer in her own right, her last release "Love + Flow" with rappers Giant and millz being described as an "exercise in creativity for the soul," but also as a love letter to years of RVA boombap and nostalgia for paths travelled and non-travelled. But most of all, I was honored to host Blair as someone who dives into sampling as both a conversational tool, and time capsule, in addition to her own mission statement to amplify Black femme energy. Archival recordings include the Huguenot Marching Band (2004), transmissions from WLEE (1979), fireworks coupled with John Coltrane in the distance (2022), and old Panoramic work (2019). The conversation has been presented nonlinearly, recorded in WRIR's studio and over Zoom between November 2023 - April 2024. Memory recall is usually nonlinear, anyway.
