Kim Ann Foxman takes us direct to the heart of a sweaty warehouse rave with these two red hot new singles. 'Connection' is all bright stabs, sci-fi effects and coruscated old school house jack that is impossible to ignore. Luca Lozano smooths it out slightly and races ahead with a big baseline that gets you making elastic moves. Foxmann's 'Magic Magic' then keeps up the rave house vibe but with a tinge of trancey-euphoria in the big, bright synths. Matisa's remix is all about smoother house pleasures. This is functional music with a big heart.

@elfenberg has become a well known figure within dance music spheres for his expertly crafted and otherworldly chuggy sound. Taking cues from a wide variety of influences, Elfenberg’s music slots in very nicely within the most celebrated of trance laden progressive house and techno - with his signature twist always allowing for a few surprises along the way. Each release he has brought to the fore has provided another string to his impressive bow, fuelling the dance and the emotions with delicate, poised techniques. As much as his tunes are dance floor orientated, his sound has a subtly and deftness to it, an enchanted rhythmic and melodic blend that gives over so much to the listener. His sound ensnares the senses, providing moments to get lost within and moments in which to let yourself go - a music universe that has always remained acutely blended and emotionally poised. 

‘Vasastan’ comes next, and this one seeks a different kind of feeling. A spaced out, IDM leaning rhythm provides the basis for a lucid acid line to permeate from side to side. The stage is set for all manner of wondrous melodic features to present themselves, from the flowery keys through to the swelling synths, it's an audial whirlpool in which to get lost over and over again.

Popping The Cherry of 2020’s latest modern-contemporary record label; Step Ball Chain, is Roza Terenzi with “Stylish Tantrum”. Suggestive title to set the tone; the 5 track EP insisting sharp, sassy, high-tempered bombs with full bodied bounce. Unexpected tempo and timing variations, flared-up bpms, half time drum cuts and slicked modular flourishes, Terenzi’s signature cheek ramps up to an extra twisted club climate, atmospheric and evocative in texture as always. Featuring collaborations with D. Tiffany and Saoirse, the release covers extended dancefloor territory, assertive anthems delivering femme finesse, choreographed to perfection.

The A side fires up with an exuberant 4-by-4-2-the-floor routine, Cosmology. Vocal cuts from the queen Fiorella, billowing bells and dramatic synthetic sweeps to form fluidity over the tight bouncy low end. Whilst flirtatious melodic notions come and go, zip-lock percussion and commanding drumwork hold it down; squeaky steeze not-so-politely letting you know what’s to come. Deceivingly dubwise introductions soon furiously interrupted with Stylish Tantrum. Ricochet rhythms and bone breaking clap backs echo around your head, electrifying percussive fills and vocal spills snatching your attention before the everything glues together vicious harmony, baseline pulsating underneath a whiplash drum display - one for the dangerous deejays.

Chosen Family Feud opens the B side, a collab with seasoned associate @d-tiffany, showing off a bossy stomping brigade. Mumbling voices, waspy sirens and spooked out synth lines haunt the beginnings of the track, stripping back to a bassline breakdown before wailing vocals and clattered percussion take over, cymbals bursting. B2 is a moment to reflect, Illusions brings the energy down, low slung metallic backbeats thrown over encompassing, effortless pads and soaring resonance. The downtempo atmosphere crept up on by a double time d’n’b re-jig, softly gliding in over the growling sub, chopped breaks reflecting and falling. Closing out the record is another joint effort, recorded in Melbourne with @saoirsemusic ; Sxc saloon dashing back to the dancefloor, hot and deep. Throbbing bass married with slick galloping drums, sensuous fleeting whispers looping to draw you into hypnosis before a climactic tempo plummet intended to turn heads.

STEP01 is kicking its heels up, stomping, strutting and trailblazing for what’s to come.

Love On The Rocks is back with our first record of the year – a remix of a obscure psychedelic proto-trance cut from ’93, remastered, reissued and remixed for the future by @roza-terenzi and @alexkassian.

‘State Of Mind’ was first released on Rhythm Design in 1993, then remixed in ’94 by @justin-drake and @o-s-m / Quinn Whalley, AKA Slack, who released their first 12” on @andrew-weatherall’s Sabres of Paradise label and years later would go on to found seminal dance music acts @peacedivision & @paranoid-london.

But not before leaving a trail of fire 12”s and remixes behind them, which they found time to do between running around London, DJing, throwing parties and pulling all nighters in the studio. This, in our view, is the key to it all - equal parts tribal, trance and techno, built around a pulverising kick drum, with synths direct from outer space, incomprehensible computerised vocals seemingly delivered through vocoder, rewinds, and breakdowns galore; it sounds like a transmission from an alien race, relentless and insane.

The vinyl comes in a full sleeve with special artwork, inlay with notes from Justin Drake & an exclusive download code.
