We have been eagerly anticipating the release of this podcast for quite some time. London-based Faery is a friend of Above Below, and we were blown away by her set at The Beacon stage, which marked the closing of Above Below 2022. After a dry weekend, the rain poured, forging the perfect environment for the psychedelic techno on display; it was as if Faery herself summoned the downpour.

Once again demonstrating her capacity to hypnotize, Faery has recorded a soundtrack for swamp-dwellers and forest-inhabitants alike. A transfixing hour of contagious groove and otherworldly sounds.

EMC atmospheres presents MARMO

As a collaborative project between @dvka and @marcomaldarella, MARMO was born out of friendship and shared passion for music-making. Starting off respectively as the electric guitarist and singer in a metal band nearly a decade ago, the pair have worked their way through various flavours of electronic music inhabiting someplace between ambient and dance music.
This is the recording of their most recent DJ set, performed at UK festival @abovebelowfestival on the 3rd of June 2023. Through this mix, the duo re-connected after a long time of physical dislocation. MARMO has always been a long-distance musical relationship, and their music constantly serves the purpose of maintaining, nurturing and solidifying friendship.

Yax Invites #170 - DJ Zoik

Pleasure Planet's kaleidoscopic debut album has been a long time coming, but good things come to those who wait. Developed over years of late-night studio improvisations, 'Pleasure Planet' is an affectionate and colorful patchwork of the New York City-based trio's knotted influences that's suspended between the rave and the chill-out room, weaving glistening pads and chunky basslines into vocal earworms and warm, saturated rhythmic cycles. Bandmates Andrew Potter, Kim Ann Foxman and Brian Hersey enter into a lysergic dialog with their discrete personal musical histories, drawing inspiration from vintage EBM, ambient music and heady early '90s West Coast rave sounds and launching these classic elements into a transcendent new sonic universe.

Paper Skies (feat. ESPĒ)

Nazira is a real powerhouse. She has almost single handedly built up an electronic music scene in her native Almaty in Kazakhstan. She runs her own ZVUK nights in a range of unique settings, was responsible for bringing a one off edition of Unsound to the region in 2017, and after word spread about her skills, she has gone on to represent around Europe while hosting workshops back home that aim to grow local talents. All this is even more impressive given how far removed her hometown is from the rest of the global circuit.

As a DJ, host on Radio Cómeme and resident at Berlin’s Room 4 Resistance, Nazira brings physicality and angular rhythm to her work. For this week’s mix, she kicks off with skeletal bass and huge open spaces of futuristic ambiance before the jittery techno and industrial drum loops take over. Melodies rarely appear, instead the mood is dark, heads down, and focussed. It is the sound of an artist who is assured and uncompromising, which is a perfect reflection of the DJ behind it.

Pleasure Planet is a dynamic New York City-based post rave collective composed of Kim Ann Foxman, Andrew Potter, and Brian Hersey. The trio's evolutionary journey unfolded through lysergic cycles of collaborative experimentation within shared studios, immersing themselves in the realms of machine-driven alchemy and nurturing their multidimensional sound. Bound by a shared creative vision and sharpened through countless late night studio improvisations, Pleasure Planet manifested into existence. Their personal approach to music-making infuses every strand of their sonic tapestry, sparkling with nostalgia for the genre-bending styles of their formative rave years, while simultaneously charting a course through unexplored skies, angling towards an alien horizon.

     Kim Ann Foxman, Hawaiian-born, New York-based artist, DJ and producer, was raised in the light of the San Francisco rave scene. Formerly a lead singer of Hercules and Love Affair, Foxman is now known internationally as a DJ, bringing her classic rave aesthetic while pushing future-leaning sounds. Andrew Potter, a veteran of the DC rave scene, and formerly one half of the electronic duo, Populette, is a producer who cut his teeth in the early 00s NYC nightlife, where he honed his skills in basement clubs and the studio. Brian Hersey, long a wanderer of the underground and club scenes of NYC, brings his eclectic sensibilities to the sonic mosaic of Pleasure Planet, cultivated through his explorations with the bedroom electronica of Ciao.

     SELF:TIMER is the label created by Foxman and Potter as a home system for Pleasure Planet, and anything else that fits their brand of the psychedelic, weird and wonderful. Together, they hope to bring this sound to your world sometime soon, at your pleasure.
