Speaking up for ourselves and staying informed about our wellness healthcare options is an act of self-love.

In my new series, Healing the Black Woman I explore the state of the black woman's health holistically - mind, body and spirit. I have been a part of research committees exploring the reasons for the alarming mortality rates of black women following childbirth and the conversation has expanded as celebrities come forward with their experiences increasing awareness of something affecting communities of black women. I am learning this disparity expands beyond the bounds of childbirth and affects every aspect of health and wellness from self-care to hospital care. 

I sought out some dynamic women who are making powerful contributions to health and wellness in our communities through their work and testimonies.  I had some amazing conversations with 7 phenomenal guests who shared with me their personal experiences as a black woman and their work and ideas about how to address issues you have seen as it relates to black women's healing journey. 

In Episode 23, I speak with Dr. Kim Baker, Research Faculty at UTHealth specializing in sexual health and women's reproductive health. I met Dr.  Baker while serving on one of her research committees to gather data on why the mortality rate following childbirth among black women was 3 times more than that of white women. Her research introduced me to these alarming rates and insight into why there were such gaping disparities. Dr. Jones also shares her personal experience with a former provider whose level of care was impacted by their bias and how she had to confront the provider with her feelings and shared better practices. Addressing shame among women due to their personal choices regarding their sexual health is a passion of Dr. Baker's and reflected in her teachings.
