What a serious pleasure it is to welcome Aurora Halal and DJ G! Without doubt two of the classiest operators in the NYC dance scene, Aurora and Gareth are some of the people behind parties like Mutual Dreaming, Sustain-Release and Nowadays, and are two of our favourite DJs in the biz. 

Joining us for their first mix together since the height of the 2020 lockdowns, where their combined palates seemed to gel effortlessly across the downtempo and d'n'b spectrum for the wonderful Juanita's series, their follow up offering remains cosmic at its core, but with dance floors back in full swing we're hit with a high octane amalgamation of souped-up alien techno, mysterious atmospheres and wonky futuristic breaks, ever progressing with blends of the surgical variety. 28th Episode of Cartel Podcast with Hypnoskull

June 2022 marked the exact 30th anniversary of German/Belgian Patrick Stevens (°1973) project hypnoskull which was started in 1992, rooted in the aftermath of the first wave of industrial music but as well in the humid warehouses of the early techno scene of the nineties and the underground stages of harsh noise. One of the pioneers to combine industrial music with techno resulting in legendary releases on the German cult-label ant-zen, numerous live performances all over the globe in iconic clubs like CBGB’s New York, Rex Paris, KitKat Berlin and cities like Moscow, Beirut, Los Angeles, Chicago and so on, this one-man project, sometimes expanded with artists and performers from contemporary dance, theatre and film, is as unpredictable as the ideology behind it: a lo-fi, harsh, monotone assault of political thoughts, subversive rants and sheer emotional outbursts towards a society first questioned, deconstructed, destroyed and left behind without a solution or a better plan. Music as a weapon and as well as a tool for self-dissection. In recent years, hypnoskull got acknowledged by lots of producers and artists in the field of industrial techno, resulting in releases, collaborations, remix work and production for many of the big players in this genre.

For this podcast, hypnoskull selected a number of brandnew tracks and releases as well as some forgotten old gems. Crossing every possible border of whatever written and unwritten rules of whatsoever ‘scene’ or subculture, this mix fiercely shows what it is still about for Patrick Stevens, after 30 years of producing, playing live and deejaying, as he states himself: ‘I get claustrophobic when I witness how the techno scene became lately. Techno became the soundtrack provided by good looking boys and girls who strive to make their business plans come true, in clubs that degraded themselves from laboratories to corporate boxes of emptiness. That’s why I selected both some radical memories from tracks and styles which were once as well played in the clubs, and some brilliant music by new, young and emerging producers. Belgium is as well coming back from a low, especially in the city of Brussels, where plenty of astonishing producers be them Belgians or expats gather and create a new wave of exciting electronic music as we speak. That was a long time ago. They’re in here as well by the likes of Maltash, Elaina Vierce and Raum. And Paris as well, check Age of hate, ZNZL, Prophän,… There’s a great connection between both cities also. I truly believe great stuff will happen again very soon.’

Whispers (Original Mix)

If time was a lost part of Bruno Deodato’s brain and if you could travel back inside it you might find some lost tapes from the first half of the 80s where Lena Muir and Profil Horizontal explored the nether regions of electronic music. Produced somewhere between a basement in Brussels and an attic in the outskirts of Paris, back when tape reel to reels, primitive rhythm boxes and analogue synths still carried a vague promise of the future, this music translated a certain atomic paranoia fueled by the cold war industry. Lo-fi music, abbrasive, high pressure, dense, clipped to the max, like it was intended to punish any woofer that gets between it and the air.

Lena Muir is electronic body music on the verge of collapse: all pounding rhythms and echoes of the city at night while Profile Horizontal sounds like modern architecture exploding in slow motion in a black and white film.

Q. How would you describe yourselves?

G: I’m the venue manager and a booker at Nowadays and grateful participant in independent New York dance music culture generally.
H: I guess I used to be a DJ?

Q. How long have you both been a part of the music scene in NY?

G: I came here from Dublin in 2011 but had to leave at the end of 2013 because of visa issues. After that I kept in close contact with friends here and I was lucky enough to be able to come back in early 2017 so it’s been just over 8 years now.
H: I moved here in 2007 very starry eyed, and the scene was much smaller then. When I starting throwing my own parties in 2010, it felt like everything was changing, which was exciting to be a part of. And actually that feeling hasn’t slowed down, even now.

Q. Tell us a little bit about this mix.

H: This was recorded in April during our peak-Quar isolation and existential questioning. We imagined a soundtrack for cyclists and the lone stoned headphone wanderers who were doing the same types of thinking. It was Gareth’s first time making a mix and it was fun to find music we had in common for it, which was mostly sub-100bpm and above 160. It goes all over the place genre-wise but stays in the same mood space.
G: Yeah Aurora taught me how to use the CDJs and I used some of the early quarantine free time to go back over music I had always wanted to spend more time with but never really got around to. Doing this was a fun way to reflect on the kind of sounds I’m interested in and find out where they overlap with Aurora’s. Very, very grateful to her for showing me the ropes and to Juanita for the chance to stitch a few of them together.
