Recorded my first cut in months and only afterwards realized that it was the birthday of Charles Bukowski. It was only after being told that some of my poems were like Hank's that I actually read his stuff, so I can safely say that I'm firmly in the "admirer" camp rather than "imitator". That being said, his words in general, this poem in particular, and the book it comes from (Love Is A Dog From Hell) has served as a poetical touchstone for me throughout the years. Having a chance to record one of his poems is an honor and I raise my glass in a toast to one of the best. Thanks for the words, Hank.

i stand connected

despair can sometimes lead to catharsis. after reading the news our of las vegas today, i wasn't sure what else to do but write. that led to recording. it may not feel a whole lot better, but it gives me a chance to say this to whomever is reading... take care of yourself, take care of someone else. as marvin gaye said, only love can conquer hate.

this poem was written and performed beautifully by Eric Darby (https://youtu.be/JfTa4B7wQ_8). this recording is simply an experiment asking what would happen if the narrator were a little less altruistic and a little more used car salesman. however, this narrator happened to have a conscience and began coming around towards the end in spite of his own self interest.
