The brand new EP from APRA Award and Mercury Prize winning producer and musician Plutonic Lab is here: NEW RUINS. The EP is a six track collection of music that takes in a wide range of creative and sonic influences, perfectly mirroring Plutonic Lab’s own diverse repertoire.

Featuring a striking list of guest artists including Black Milk, Oliver St. Louis, Raiza Biza and frequent collaborator Natalie Slade, ‘The New Ruins EP’ also employs the talent of a new wave of strong emerging voices in Hip Hop and R&B in Nardean, Ratu Da Cheef and Sunny Reyne.

Produced and arranged by Plutonic Lab himself out of Habitat 69 in Melbourne, the New Ruins EP has that inimitable Pluto feel right throughout. The production quality is crisp; percussion patterns blend beautifully with brass and beat arrangements.

It’s a masterclass in what Plutonic Lab does and is known for. And yet, it’s an evolution for the artist too. The orchestration of songs like ‘Casino In The Sky’ and ‘Long Slow’ are textured and hold weight as standalone efforts; then you’ve got the likes of ‘Good Thing’ and ‘Falling’, two examples of Plutonic Lab’s expert touch when it comes to soul and R&B production.

The process of making the EP was an involved one that took time but in the end, the rewards clearly speak for themselves.

“In the process of writing this record I proved to myself that I’m still progressing and evolving as an artist, I really got to develop the orchestrations and song craft. Each collaborator inspired diverse compositions and I think in turn “The New Ruins” became a much more nuanced and honed project. I guess good things take time and I dedicated myself to create something beautiful and worthwhile, even though the world seemed like it was falling apart.”

Produced, mixed, and mastered by up-coming prodigy IceyGhosts (Van Zyl Wagner), the two paired up to deliver a fresh, smokey banger about always having ‘Back Up’ – “something a lot of us have had to learn the hard way in recent years”, says Rubi. “We've all had a moment or two where we didn’t have any back up, and this is just a reminder to back up your back up!”

The riddim heavy, bouncy dancehall / hip hop tune is a testament to Rubi Du’s versatility and exuberant style which invokes her Caribbean heritage and Rastafarian upbringing.

“Icey is really good at producing beats that bring out the best flow in me. When I first heard the riddim, I texted him straight away telling him not to show it to anyone else because I love it so much hahaha”, says Rubi.

Working with IceyGhosts was a fun, fast and easy collab experience for Rubi Du, saying “We have such good studio chemistry it only took us a couple of house to record the track, and we both knew then and there we had to share it. I’m really happy with the result.”

And having the legendary Chip Matthews lay the bass for this track was definitely a highlight for me!”

GC OConnor is a Sydney/Gadigal-based multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, and composer whose music blends soul, jazz, R&B, and alternative influences into a style she describes as "stoner-soul."  Following years of building a reputation as a formidable live performer with shows across Australia, the UK, and Europe, she released her EP ‘Soul Lament’ in November 2023 via Low Key Source, gaining support from KEXP, Jazz FM,  Bandcamp Daily, Jyoty, Rinse FM, Somewhere Soul & more. With this debut offering OConnor's husky vocals and rich, layered arrangements garnered critical acclaim for their emotional depth and sonic sophistication, and drew comparisons to artists like Cleo Sol and Nai Palm. Further developing this distinctive and emotive emotive storytelling style, she now returns with new single ‘Sunday Best’, due for release 9th May via Low Key Source.

Blissful, reverberating chords open the track, joined by a bedrock of evolving percussion - paving the way for GC to deliver her trademark enriched, soul-soothing dulcet tones, whilst maintaining the track’s stripped down, melodic sensibilities. Revered for his atmospheric soundscapes and varied styles, underground hip-hop producer Silent Titan returns to shake up the genre with his most ambitious work yet—'Dream State', a 17-track sonic odyssey.

After years of lurking in the margins of lo-fi playlists, late-night studio sessions, and cult producer circles, Silent Titan has stepped fully into the spotlight with a project that defies boundaries. 'Dream State' is more than an album—it's a lucid exploration of subconscious rhythms, surreal collaborations, and ethereal beats that hover somewhere between reality and REM sleep.

Rapaport and P.Major (Peter Farrar) release ‘Second Guess’ debut single from forthcoming new collaborative album ‘Rap Major’.

‘Second Guess’ is the assuredly laid back first single from the forthcoming album ‘Rap Major’ by producer, composer, and acclaimed jazz saxophonist Peter Farrar (P. Major) and rapper/guitarist Rapaport to be released through label Low Key Source in late 2025. ‘Second Guess’ is a boom bap meditation on self-belief and lost love over P.Major’s thick sample heavy, analogue beat.

Although Rap Major is their first collaborative album release, Rapaport and P.Major have worked together in various projects for 25 years, notably as half of award-winning (Triple J Unearthed competition 2014) four-piece Loose Change who released two albums ‘untitled’ (2010) and ‘Listening Party’ (2014) alongside Ellesquire and DJ Sam Zubrycki.

The album ‘Rap Major’ sees Rapaport deliver raps around grief, friendship, relationships and childhood over P.Major’s nuanced compositions and analog production, with the entire album produced on the MPC4000.

Rwandan New Zealand rapper and lyricist Raiza Biza returns to the fray with his first single in two years, ‘Chapati’ featuring Fijian Australian hip-hop/R&B artist Jdro.

Named after the flatbread no curry is complete without, the song’s uptempo bounce sees the two friends trading stories about tearing up Melbourne’s inner-city streets and music venues over a stripped-down, percussive instrumental produced by the multi-genre beatmaker and DJ Skinni. While reflecting on shutting down Section 8 and Ferdydurke, Raiza Biza reminds us why he’s still got the crown. A masterclass in modern neo soul, ‘Lying’ taps into the same Soulquarian traditions  D'Angelo, Erykah Badu, and Bilal steeped themselves in during the late 1990s/early 2000s. At the same time, it continues to situate her alongside the likes of Ella Haber, Nai Palm, Wallace and Noah Slee, as part of a still-rising wave of antipodean musicians with one ear trained on the past, and the other listening out for the future of soul music.

Supported by a hip-hugging rhythm section and golden-toned guitars and keyboards crafted by her longtime collaborator, the selector, musician and producer Loraio, the song’s low-slung instrumental hits the sweet spot.

New Zealand’s longtime hip-hop heavyweight David Dallas and celebrated Sudanese-American rapper/producer Oddisee, and announce their collaborative single, ‘Midas’.

Like a lonely king reclining on a throne surrounded by ruins, David Dallas adopts a sing-song rap style. P.Major’s thick sample heavy, analogue beats produced entirely on the MPC4000 are combined with Rapaport’s heartfelt raps around grief,
friendship and relationships to create an assured harmonically rich, hip hop album.

The second single ‘Idol’ is a heavy hitting meditation on letting go of expectations as an artist, and acceptance of one’s own journey in life. "Across The Globe" is the new series of releases from Low Key Source which sees established producers team up with vocalists and MC’s from Australia, New Zealand and beyond. 

Volume 1 showcases the beats of Detroit’s Apollo Brown known for his production through Mello Music Group which has seen him work with the likes of Oddisee, Guilty Simpson, Skyzoo, Ras Kass, OC, Sean Price, Boog Brown, Big Pooh and most recently Planet Asia on their new album “Anchoives”. 

“Reminiscing” sees the UK’s Jehst team up with Children Of Zeus vocalist Tyler Daley and has them reflecting about back in the day and giving a special mention to the passing of UK Producer Mark B. It’s special boom-bap throwback sound with sweeping strings captures perfectly the message of what life was once like being free from responsibilities. 

The English city of Nottingham is represented on the posse cut “Time’s Different” showcasing the lyrical skills of up and comers Juga-Naut and Vandal Savage alongside veteran Cappo. It’s hard hitting snare snaps into a crispy beat which instantly takes you into headnod mode. 

Apollo Brown never fails to execute his signature robust Hip Hop production as heard on "World Revolves" where Dialectrix spits fire with a rhythmical flow that resembles the way a sparrow would slice across the air - in short bursts left and right, up and down with ease. Ahead of their upcoming Australia & New Zealand tour, the collaboration are also treating fans to the wild visuals for debut single “Runner” ft. Baro.

The impeccable release absorbs all the free flowing vocals and dynamic production afforded by the lineup of cross-nation collaborators, making for a melting pot of hip-hop and soul visions in one stunning reel of beats. Recent track “Runner” ft. Baro gave the first taste from the team; a high tempo, beat driven hip hop track electrified by dancing production from Black Milk, slick lyrics and cheeky verses from Melbourne friend Baro. The perfect pairing of two boldly creative artists, BLONDE is the six track collaboration between veteran producer Haz Beats and soul-heavy vocalist/producer Miloux (Rebecca Melrose), that is out today on all streaming services via Low Key Source.

What can be described as a jazz, soul and hip-hop fusion project, Blonde came together over the wide expanse of the internet, in a back and forth exchange between the two artists during 2018. Following Haz’s involvement on Miloux’s earlier remix EPs, Haz provided Miloux with a folder of 35 beats and the rest was history. Miloux was instantly inspired, writing lyrics and melodies that poured quickly onto paper. The pair then recorded with prolific engineer Ben Lawson at Auckland’s Red Bull Studios, with various instrumentalists including Frank Eliesa (Yokozuna, CHAII) and Guy Harrison (Avantdale Bowling Club) in what is now the first project of many to come from this dynamic duo.

Whether it’s a solo intimate set or with a full band in tow, Miloux has been constantly praised for her powerful vocals and her passion for experimentation within the live and recorded music sphere. She has become a sought-after collaborator for Australasian producers, featuring on tracks from the likes of Chores, Benson, The Adults, Layla Kardan, Terace, and Yoko Zuna. This culmination of experience has gained her a strong following in the electronic realm.

Haz is the bastard child Of Minnie Ripperton and Mike Tyson. A sample nerd who can still DJ your cousin’s wedding. His music is distinctively soulful yet always hopeful. He is widely known for his musical direction for Home Brew and Team Dynamite, as well as his production work for Diggy Dupe and Avantdale Bowling Club, and remixes for Aaradhna and Fat Freddy’s Drop.

When Raiza Biza dropped his breakout Dream Something mixtape in 2012, the Hamilton-based Rwandan rapper was one of a handful of African hip-hop artists in New Zealand. At the time, he was hyper-aware of how his actions would affect the perception of his community, and the aspirations of the next generation of African New Zealand musicians. On stage and informally, he spoke like a politician, and show by show; he introduced himself to the country with intent, purpose and meaning.

Eight years later, things look pretty different. These days, Raiza is far from alone, as the guest cast of 'Funds Pt. II' undefinably illustrates. 'Funds Pt. II', recorded at Red Bull Studios Auckland, is a posse cut remix of 'Funds' (featuring Blaze The Emperor), an album cut off Raiza's latest project Bygones. 

Where 'Funds' was an opportunity for the two Hamilton MCs and producer Habibi Zee to indulge in paranoid, soft-focus introspection around the pursuit of the bag, 'Funds Pt. II' retools that energy into undeniable, all-or-nothing aspiration. This time, they bring new generation African New Zealand MCs JessB, Mo Muse and Abdul Kay along for the ride, and the talent level has given Raiza permission to stop self-censoring and talk that talk. 

In 2020, Israel "Stylebender" Adesanya is the UFC Middleweight Champion, JessB is an MTV European Music Award winner, and African New Zealanders are an established part of New Zealand's cultural milieu. Raiza doesn't have to worry about how these communities are perceived anymore, or what their aspirations look like. African Kiwi artist Raiza Biza ends summer on a high note with a return to his signature sound dropping the single ‘Turmeric Tea’ taken off his new album ‘A Summer In Retrograde’. This is the first release since his Aotearoa Music Award nominated project ‘Grand Opening, Grand Closing’ which came out at the height of COVID lockdown in New Zealand last year.

Award winning artist and producer Plutonic Lab returns today, releasing music that comes drenched in striking R&B tones: new single, ‘Good Thing’. 

Featuring frequent collaborator, vocalist Natalie Slade, ‘Good Thing’ revels in nostalgic and romantic vibes. Plutonic Lab, applying his expert ear for melody and arrangement, constructs a beautiful, dreamy soundscape that Slade’s rich vocals weave effortlessly throughout.

The genesis of ‘Good Thing’ started - as with most sonic ideas - in the studio, with Plutonic Lab working on different ideas at his Wurlitzer electric piano. The cyclical melody, coupled with the chords, became the base of the song and from there, ‘Good Thing’ would grow into something great. Inspired by the Wurlitzer melody, Slade found herself creating within a sonic scope that was built on beautiful decadence and fantasy.

The fantastical elements of ‘Good Thing’ make the track an immersive listen. 
“Never give up on your good love, I won’t,” Slade sings, as orchestral strings swell around the lush production. The addition of brass and rhythmic builds beautifully, giving ‘Good Thing’ a rich vintage sound. 

“I created a demo for Natalie that already had the basic drums (which were a kind of slow samba), strings, bass guitar and the Wurlitzer electric piano parts, I also added that popcorn synth sound that plays the melodic counter to the piano. I named the beat ‘Wurly Dreams’ and I think the title inspired Nat to write the song”.  Plutonic Lab

Plutonic Lab and Slade have been collaborators for years, with Slade appearing on previous Plutonic Lab offerings, as well as their group project SOUNDS LIKE FRANCO. Slade has also been courting international attention for her solo work; her signing to UK label Eglo Records seeing her in the company of artists including Fatima and Floating Points.

Across the years and releases, the duo’s dynamism has strengthened; a strength that comes across so easily in ‘Good Thing’. It’s soul music that evokes memories of decades gone by, while still putting a fresh and contemporary foot forward.
