The Ying and the Yang II Deep House / Broken Beat 2025.1

This mix is a tribute to the late Andy Williams of Yam Who? fame, who sadly passed away in early March 2025. Active in music since 1989, he began his journey as a DJ and went on to wear many hats: producer, label boss, event promoter, and journalist.

He was involved in three influential labels — ISM Records (founded in 2009), Midnight Riot (co-founded with Phil Rose in 2012), and its sublabel Black Riot, launched in 2016. Through these imprints, Andy released music from artists such as Amp Fiddler, Eli Escobar, and Robert Owens.

In 2003, he adopted the Yam Who? moniker alongside collaborator Des Morgan, who was part of the project until the late 2000s. Together, they released unofficial reworks that would go on to define an entire era, leaving a lasting mark on the underground dance music scene. In many ways, the duo revolutionized the art of the DJ edit — retooling contemporary tracks from neo-soul, R&B, and hip-hop artists, adding subtle instrumentation and carefully reshaping them for underground audiences, ultimately transforming them into entirely new sonic experiences.

A key focus of this mix is on those early pirate soul bootlegs and remixes from around 2003–2007 - from Raphael Saadiq to Pharrell, Amp Fiddler, and Xantoné Blacq — raw, soulful, and game-changing. Alongside these early works, I’ve also included a few of Andy’s later disco and house productions to showcase the full scope of his musical journey.
