Ambience overlooking the valley of Paul coming down from Cova at about 880m around 20:00. Gentle wind and loads of crickets around the banana plantations.

Interpretation of a little carol, adapted to the village of Tarrafal (a little fisherman's village on the west coast of Santo Antao).

This is a dialog with three people involved a man and a woman at a house
on the other side of the valley (left of mic) and a woman further up on
the serpentines I recorded on (right/behind of mic). The voices
especially of the woman behind the recording location are ridden with
echo incredibly smeared by reverb. The reverb having a very slow attack
even sounds a bit like played backwards which somewhat reminds me of
vocal treatment often present in dream scenes. I wasn't sure about
releasing this as I wasn't able to ask the recorded people for
permission so I asked my host what they were talking about. What is
intelligible is harmless chatter between the man and the distant woman
aswell as the woman near him complaining that he should chat less and
work more. My host said I shouldn't worry so here it is ...

Aside from  small songbirds the most prominent calls of this recording originate from a swarm crows. Circling around the mountains.

Recorded at about 23:00 this recording contains the variety of crickets present everywhere in Paul during the night as well as a colony of owls which probably reside on one of the mountains opposing the recording location.

Recorded around Pico da Cruz at the edge of the forest beneath the trees. Various Songbirds flapping and chirping all around the microphone.

If you manage to block out all sound, you will have no trouble looking around at the warp and woof of the world, but you will feel an outsider, detached from the goings on. Sound puts us into the picture, or makes the picture more than an image. As the Inuit asks the visitor coming in out of the cold: speak so that I may see you. Add a voice, even a whisper, so that the other is really there.
