This summer, NuNorthern Soul celebrates its tenth birthday via the release of a lusciously packaged vinyl box set. After that, there’s the small matter of the label’s 50th release, a gorgeous, download-only EP from Bali-based Joey Fitzgerald AKA Gold Suite. Given that NNS was based for many years in Bali, and Fitzgerald and label boss Phil Cooper are old friends, it seems a fitting way to notch up half a century of releases.

Fitzgerald scored something of an underground hit with his self-released debut EP as Gold Suite, Hideaway – a set of tracks that Mixmag Asia praised to the hilt and ended up reaching Bandcamp’s list of bestsellers following its release in the spring of 2021. It was by no means his first foray into production – he’d previously delivered a handful of well-regarded edits and remixes – but it signalled a new chapter in the career of a DJ/producer who was previously better known for soundtracking sunsets and late night audio excursions at such iconic Bali venues as Potato Head Beach Club, 40 Thieves, Karma Beach and Mano Beach House.

The four tracks showcased on the On My Horizon EP do a terrific job in distilling his influences and inspirations into a colourful, sunset-ready and undeniably Balearic personal style that avoids easy categorization.

He begins with ‘The Cowboy’, a head-nodding and hazy chunk of dub-fired downtempo brilliance rich in warming bass, glistening guitar licks, spacey synth sounds and tropical lead lines, before brilliantly joining the dots between mid-‘80s Mediterranean synth-pop, relaxed nu-disco and Jose Padilla style Balearica on the kaleidoscopic wonder that is ‘Blue Lagoon’.

As the EP progresses, Fitzgerald skips merrily towards the dancefloor whilst retaining the inherently hot and humid atmosphere that marks out his music. ‘Slip On’ is a killer slab of Balearic boogie piled high with delay-laden drum machine hits, dreamy pads, undulating synth-bass and BB&Q Band keyboard riffs, while ‘On My Horizon’ sees Fitzgerald charge towards peak-time dancefloors via a mixture of weighty, Idjut Boys-esque dub disco grooves, flash-fried funk-rock licks and jangling, Gunfight at the O.K Corral guitars. Daniele Baldelli would approve.

As well as being NuNorthern Soul’s 50th release, On My Horizon is also the latest volume in the label’s Myths of Ibiza series – a set of eight EPs to be released throughout 2022, each of which features bespoke artwork from Ibiza-based illustrator Emily McGuinness. Her images for Myths of Ibiza all draw inspiration from folkloric tales of the White Isle. Depicted on the front of Gold Suite’s first NuNorthern Soul EP is “the familiar”, a mythical small goblin born from the stem of an herb that legend says only grows on the night of San Juan, under the old bridge of Santa Eulària des Riu. According to locals, if you manage to pick one of the short-lived plants and take one of its stems, it will come to life and turn into “the familiar”.

“Sonar Kollekting Vol. 1”, releases in 2013, was actually the first true, official showcase of the by now over two decades operating Berlin label. Four years later we already get the chance to get once more a 360-degree view of Sonar Kollektiv's creative work. Four years during which quite a lot has happened apparently. No more than two artists of all the present collaborators on Vol.2 have been already featured on the first edition of “Sonar Kollekting”: Pete Josef and Stee Downes. “Sonar Kollekting Vol. 2” opens up an appetizing prospect on the label's near future when it comes to current and forthcoming releases. 
Just out, for example, is the marvellous electronics-folky album “Wiped Out” by Mooryc, off which the profound song “One Day” is featured here. A bit buoyant is the remix done by Erobique for Marlow's Backroom (on which you can hear Pete Josef). Next to other releases of the past months (The Black 80s, Mius und Tim Aminov), the listener is treated with ten exclusive tracks on this impressive collection. Talents like Dürerstuben already aroused attention with releases on Mutual Musik, Pampa Records und Luettje Luise and now make a lot of noise via Sonar Kollektiv. “Will E. & Gynt Her” implies a splendid feature of the twosome and the label. Together with London based singer Mark Borgazzi, Jad & The (formerly known as Jad & The Ladyboy) also contributes a song thus far unreleased (“Underwater”) to the 15 tracks strong compilation. From Harry Miller aka Glow In The Dark we get “Dark Stars”, a song not to be found on his just released debut “Future Bliss”. There is additional exclusive material in the form of the Nikitch remix of ComixXx' “Can U Feel?”, a subtle remix by ComixXx and Alex Barck for Matthew Halsall & The Gondwana Orchestra's “Into Forever”, a remix by Envee for Pete Josef's “The Travelling Song” (off his 2015 album “Colour”) and new tracks by Dutchman Geurt Kersjes aka Pitto (“Being”), the Italian Hip-hop production combo The Mixtapers (“Take Me Away”) and as well as ComixXx (“Synthesizer Journey”).

Soulsmoke is a project that emerged out of a shared love of underground US disco, melodic Italian house and esoteric Balearic treasures. With Ché Wilson (Guevarism) working alongside Josh Ray (JRay), Soulsmoke flirts with all three styles, bridging the down and dirty grooves of disco with the floating euphoria of house music, all with an eye on the hedonistic, loved-up party beaches across the Europe.

Arriving with a statement of intent, 9-minutes of hard-hitting piano-driven house, Soulsmoke’s ‘Eternal Desire’ pulls no punches in the pursuit of moving a peak-time crowd. Working with younger Liverpool-based musicians, Super Weird Substance is ebbing slowly closer to its goal of a house-band, with Andrew Wileman providing infectious keys and Lady Soul stepping up with a primal take on JRay’s cosmically charged lyrics, backed subtly by Carmel Reynolds.

Having been DJing together for over a year, whilst previously collaborating on a number of DJ edits as the Fire House collective, Ché Wilson and JRay have built up a solid working relationship, with a finessed and varied musical ability paired with a deep and extensive knowledge of music.

Soulsmoke can be seen as the Yin to the Yang of the Cryptide collective, another project formed by duo, which also includes a host of like-minded musicians and producers. The dark and brooding acid/electro/breakbeat sounds of The Cryptide form a balance to the majestic and uplifting disco/house/Balearic sounds of Soulsmoke.

JRay and Ché Wilson have recently begun DJing together as Soulsmoke and are set to take Super Weird Substance’s new sound to venues and festivals around the UK, with further releases later this year.
