Welsh artist Kelly Lee Owens has a special grasp on techno. She can make it sound wild and naturalistic, like wind blowing through a dense forest, or make it feel cold and sleek, like a gleaming slab of chrome. Either way, though, it's always full of emotion, thanks to the intricate textures and distinctive tones of her voice. You might even say she takes a singer-songwriter approach to techno, but that doesn't mean her music isn't suited for the dance floor.

Her most recent album, <a href=/reviews/34853 target="_blank"><i>LP.8</i></a>, marks a step away from the dance floor, however, and into a place a little more dark, more unpredictable. It's also some of her most gorgeous work, centering around "Anadlu," an eight-minute cut that feels perfectly pitched between ambient and techno, with heavy, lumbering drums but an otherwise lightweight, almost wispy feel.
 Owens' RA Podcast occupies this zone almost perfectly. Beginning with 11th century music from Hildegard von Bingen, it ties all sorts of traditions together, from Pan Sonic to Throbbing Gristle to Marco Shuttle to Oneohtrix Point Never & Rosalía. It floats, it accelerates, it loops and doubles back in on itself, an hour of gripping electronics from one of techno's most distinctive voices.

Quilotoa return with ‘Sell Them Gold’, marking the pair’s first release while living in separate places, with KEPLR back in London and LTO in Bristol. 

They’ve always had a strong connection with both cities, with LTO’s infamous collaboration project, ‘Old Apparatus’ gaining notoriety on the Deep Medi label in 2011; and KEPLR’s formative years in the west country, escaping to Bristol to surround himself with the music of the city. This isn’t lost on Sell Them Gold, which has heavy influences from old-school Bristol trip hop and south London’s post dubstep era. 

Heavily compressed drums are paired with sparse melodic synths, found sounds and an eerie vocal. This marks the most coherent blend of the pair’s work to date, something which living in separate locations will not hinder in future works. 

“We’re aware that we won’t be able to work together as easily as we have in the past, but we’re still very tight, having shared so many great experiences since we first met in South America, and the 10 years following in Bristol. We became parents pretty much at the same time too and although that adds to the difficulty in finding time to make music, there’s so much we still share and a lot of enjoyment we get from creating something together as friends. It’s a really great way to spend time with each other catching up while doing something constructive.”

Sell Them Gold

A solo electronic producer based in Bristol, LTO first garnered attention and praise in 2011 as part of the Old Apparatus collective with their abstract experimental bass-driven music, submerged in swirls and fragments of otherworldly static and interference. LTO is also part of Khing Kang King with cult rapper Mowgli.

Now working on solo music as well as with the above collaborators, LTO’s second release under his own name is the rich, characteristically mysterious No Pasa Nada EP, a heady cloud of greyscale sound design, ghostly timbres and deep sonics. It is at once challenging and mesmerising, crafted in part from found sound and field recordings, treated and disguised beyond their origins. The result is a production neither fully organic nor mechanic, reminiscent of the fertile UK grime and dubstep scenes (delays, claps and 808 sounds are all present here) but with a nocturnal miasma and a fierce intellect. The influence of post-rock and modern classical music can also be heard throughout the record in its harmonic progressions, compositional structures and in its division between artist and output.

The No Pasa Nada name and track titles - common Spanish verbs - are informed by LTO’s backpacking travels through South America, as much a field recording excursion as a cultural tour.

Based in Bristol, LTO first made waves as part of mysterious electronic collective Old Apparatus. As a solo producer, LTO has since attracted attention with three albums.

LTO's ambition to create ever more ambiguous and far-reaching sonic environments, whilst retaining something of the familiar and physical, have led him to take inspiration from imagined landscapes of the folklore of his Welsh ancestry and of the planet Mars. Both images of enchanted forests battling enraged giants from the underworld and unimaginably hostile planetary events guide this work of great magnitude.

In 'Daear', LTO explores an expansive sound pallet of swelling synths and noise, ambiguous string instruments, thunderous percussion, unearthly voices and his signature sound the piano, mostly processed beyond recognition. The result is a mysterious and deeply textured journey that could be set in both the distant past and uncertain future, on this planet or beyond.
