WAV52 | 01 | Weekly Audio Ventures

WAV52 is a yearlong musical journey based on tutorials from PushPatterns Craig Lowe and WRKSHP’s Andri Søren. Every week, a new sound, a new adventure. With WAV52 Weekly Audio Ventures, I’m embarking on a challenge to create music every single week for an entire year. It starts simple: just pure audio files, no effects, no MIDI—like an artist sketching with nothing but pencil and paper.  

But as the weeks go by, the journey becomes more adventurous. Slowly, MIDI and effects will make their way into my compositions, and these simple sketches will transform into intricate musical landscapes. Where will this evolution take me? That’s the thrill of it: the destination is unknown, and each week brings new surprises.  

This is more than just a project—it’s a story about growth, experimentation, and the joy of creating music. The early steps might be raw and unpolished, but that’s the beauty of a journey. It’s not about perfection; it’s about discovery.

I’ve been working with the transformation tools in Live 12. I haven’t tried all of them yet, but I plan to in the coming weeks. They offer a completely new approach, which excites me and gives me fresh inspiration to explore further. Now that I have a better understanding of how they work, I want to use them more often.  

I’ve also realized that spending an entire day working on sound doesn’t really work for me. I get better results when I spread the process over several days. Usually, I create around ten different versions of a composition within a week. It’s not about the number of versions but rather about refining a composition until I feel reasonably satisfied with it. Setting a one-week deadline helps me stay focused—otherwise, I would keep tweaking and making endless adjustments.

This week, I focused once again on the MIDI Transformation and Generative Tools. It’s slowly starting to make more sense. Some tools are quite sensitive and often very unpredictable — but to me, that’s actually an advantage. I love incorporating unexpected elements into my compositions. Whether the listener always picks up on that, I’m not so sure. Apparently, everyone hears something different than what you originally put into the piece. That alone could be a fascinating study.

I’ve started exploring the possibilities of MIDI instruments and effects in Ableton Live 12. My focus, this week, has been on Live’s Analog instrument, and I tried to take my time with it. In hindsight, it still wasn’t enough—there’s more to get out of it than I have so far. A week isn’t necessarily too short, but I would have to work on it constantly. Thankfully, I now understand the basics. Creating my own sounds will come later; for now, the priority is maintaining continuity and finishing one track per week

Over the past six days, I’ve been exploring the new Drum Sampler in Ableton Live. As with other instruments, I wish I had more time to spend on it. That’s not an excuse, just a reality I have to deal with this year. So far, I’ve mainly focused on manipulating one-shot samples in the Drum Sampler and have used eight drum samplers. I feel like I still have a lot to learn about mixing a track properly, but that will come later. Hey... I’m a week ahead of the schedule. This is week fourteen and I worked on WAV52 | 15 :)

‘Impulse’ is a drum sampler in Ableton Live with modulation capabilities. I mainly worked with the ‘stretch’ control, though I used it sparingly. My goal was to get more familiar with ‘Impulse’. I managed to load some of Live’s samples, but I also relied heavily on presets, which I tweaked to fit my needs.

Interestingly, my workflow has shifted. These days, I spend about eighty percent of my time in ‘Session View’, where most of the ‘creative’ process happens. I only switch to ‘Arrangement View’ for final tweaks and mixing.

Ableton Live’s Meld is a fascinating journey into sound exploration. So far, I’ve only scratched the surface, but it’s clear there’s so much more to uncover. Meld really encourages experimentation—tweaking, trying things out, and seeing what happens. My first approach was a bit cautious, but I’m definitely planning to dive in much deeper later on.

This week revolved around Ableton Live 12, with a special focus on Simpler. My long-term goal is to build a custom Simpler library filled with tailor-made instruments—ideally covering all types of sounds. I haven’t gotten to that stage yet, as creating such a library is a long-term process that requires careful planning. For now, I’ve mainly been exploring Simpler’s capabilities and created a first music track as part of that exploration.

This week, I explored the audio filters of Ableton's Live 12, with a particular focus on Overdrive and Phaser-Flanger. When using Overdrive, I intentionally opted for a sparse application, keeping the effects subtle and maintaining the dynamics of the tracks. I integrated the Phaser-Flanger into nearly all tracks of the ten instruments used. By keeping the rate as low as possible, I created an extremely gradual and organic transition in sound. This week's scale is the 8-Tone Spanish.

Love for nature and drifting thoughts... moves my internal world and helps flowing feelings into piano music. Improvisation and experimentation are my way to explore my musical language, helping me discover and deepen my creative musical side.
