Voyagers - for Pierrot Ensemble (midi)

This piece is one of longing and eventual coming-togetherness. The storm in both the text and the music symbolizes the troubles two might experience in life: bad days, frayed nerves, the stress of the world. The text boldly proclaims that no matter what troubles one might face that could pull one apart, they shall endure together.
The text is a tanka by Kakinomoto no Hitomaro as written in Manyoshu (Collection of Ten Thousand Leaves). Manyoshu is the oldest surviving anthology of Japanese poetry, compiled sometime after 759 CE.

Narukami no sukoshi toyomite
     (A faint clap of thunder)
     sashi kumori
          (Clouded skies)
          Ame mo furanu ka?
               (Perhaps rain comes)
               Kimi wo todomemu
                    (If so, will you stay here with me?)

Narukamino - for tenor and four percussionists (MIDI)

Anergy is a term from thermodynamics that refers to the energy within a system that is lost due to entropy. “anergy” seeks to explore this concept through pseudo-organic phrases and a cycling pattern that calls to mind another system—a computer system. Despite its own best efforts, the system is ultimately unable to stop the entropic motion of its requisite parts. The program, initially running smoothly, succumbs to misaligned gears, a desperate reset, and an inevitable system failure.
This performance is from the ISU Music Factory Performance on 4/11/2022 and features Kathleen Miller(violin), Satomi Radostits(violin), Nicholas McKee (viola), and Gita Srinivasan (cello).

anergy - for string quartet

Our Time of Need reflects my own experiences through this past year. As a college student—a music major at that—I often find myself overworked and overstressed. However, I have been able to find relief outside of the week away from school. I have been working as a church pianist for two and a half years now and I often find that though there is still the obligation to perform well and my own sense of pride in doing a good job, this weekly act of music-making is therapeutic to me. This piece seeks to give a sense of that relief, feeling the chaos and drudgery of daily life and eventually finding comfort and satisfaction in that spiritual connection before inevitably returning to the valley.

	Written for the Unheard-of//Ensemble, six avian vignettes seeks to explore various textural ideas from a birds-eye point of view. The six scenes are musical depictions of several birds based on their environments as well as how they move and sound. Each scene moves from one to the next, occasionally connected but oftentimes separate. The night, which is heard in the nachtmusik of the first and sixth vignettes, serves to open and close the piece—just as each day of birdsong has, as its precursor and finale, a calm darkness with the quiet hooting of owls.

Flourish of the Seven Winds - for concert band

Grooving with rhythmic intensity, sonatina for alto saxophone and percussion explores the eponymous Classical genre in a new light. The work’s two contrasting styles, its themes A and B, culminate in a multiphonic climax before a short coda which brings the piece to a close.
This was performed by Ryan Baur (alto saxophone) and Noah Berkshier (percussion) at the Illinois State University Music Factory concert on 11/15/2022.
