A symphonic poem based on the beginning of Victor Hugo's novel Les Miserables, where the ex convict Jean Valjean meets Bishop Myriel, who saves his soul and changes his life forever.

The piece starts with a dark, slow introduction, followed by the theme of Jean Valjean at 2:03, the theme of Bishop Myriel at 6:05, and the theme of Jean Valjean's desperation at 7:35. 

After that, the piece follows the events as told in the novel, starting with Valjean entering the town of Digne, and ending with the moment where the Bishop gives the silver to Valjean and says: "Jean Valjean, my brother, you no longer belong to evil, but to good. I have bought your soul of you. I withdraw it from black thoughts and the spirit of perdition, and give it to God."

A scientist reminisces. She thinks back to the moment when, as a young girl, a shocking discovery led to a cautious exploration, a realization, understanding, resolve and awe. The moment she chose her life's purpose.
