This piece was inspired in part by the line that haunted Oppenheimer destroyer of worlds. This track is about the unbearable weight of memory, of being the one who saw too much, who carried too much.

“Never Was” is my attempt to translate that weight into music. It was composed for my story The One Who Watched from the Fire, where the Devil appears not as a loud villain but as a quiet presence who dismantles hope by showing you what you might become.

The track takes the main character’s theme and twists it into a darker mirror, fractured piano, suffocating drones, distorted guitars, and heavy metal textures buried under cinematic layers. It’s not pure chaos; it’s a looping inevitability, the kind of memory the Devil would keep replaying. A portrait not of who he is, but of who he almost became.

I called it (Never Was) because this version of him is a lie, a construct of rage and collapse that the Devil saw in the fire and will try to bring back in the second book. Musically, it’s heavy, oppressive, but still human enough to feel personal. A shadow burned into sound.
