Produced in collaboration with Berlin-based duo Re.decay, DJ Amir presents a brand new remix of Strata Records founder Kenny Cox’s track ‘Lost My Love’, taken from his long- forgotten mid 70’s album ‘Clap Clap! The Joyful Noise’.

Originally planned to be the second release on Detroit’s mythic Strata label (a precursor to its more famous cousin Strata East), pianist Kenny Cox’s first and only solo album came hot on the heels of The Lyman Woodard Organization’s classic ‘Saturday Night Special’. But, for reasons lost to the mists of time, the LP never saw the light of day until DJ Amir licensed the rights to the label’s catalogue and began scouring the archive in 2012, rediscovering ‘Clap Clap! The Joyful Noise’ and issuing it on his own 180 Proof imprint.

The closing track from ‘Clap Clap! The Joyful Noise’, ‘Lost My Love’ is a bossa-tinged, flute and mellotron string-laden, languid jazz-fusion gem, with Kenny Cox’s delicate electric piano chords at its warm centre. DJ Amir joins forces with Berlin production duo Re.decay for a complete rebuild of the track from the original master stems. Their version retains the cosy, analogue atmospherics of Cox’s original, complete with piano licks and flute trills, adding unhurried jazzy disco drums and drawing out the song’s subtly sleazy bass-line.

Serving as pianist for Etta Jones and recording for Blue Note records with his Contemporary Jazz Quintet, Kenny Cox founded the Strata label in the early 70’s, a natural progression from the Strata Concert Gallery which he opened in the late 60s, a tiny artist-led performance space that played host to jazz luminaries such as Ornette Coleman, Herbie Hancock and even Charles Mingus (a live recording of whose appearance at the Gallery was issued by BBE Music in 2018). He passed away at his Detroit home in 2008, survived by his widow, Barbara Cox.

Rusty Bladez is an LP that revolves around all aspects of Libretto's time spent in the Federal Penitentiary system, with Vitamin D's production mastery providing the perfect backdrop for the true life tales.  All of the art for this release directly utilizes photos, documents, artifacts, and images from Libretto's federal case, and time in prison.  The artwork for the first single uses a photo of Libretto's portable MP3 player.  This exact same device was the only model prisoners had access to purchase, and songs could be downloaded only from the Fed's computer, exclusively from the Walmart catalogue at $2 a song.  Libretto's friend @Sethpaulproductions transferred him money to purchase the player and $100 worth of songs.  Needless to say, this MP3 player was a lifeline while Libretto served his time, and was a key component in crafting his own classic compositions.

Featuring a duo of Bad Boy flips from  Cutso (Bay Area, USA) who puts a housey touch on a classic Big Momma cut, while BoomBaptist (Texas, USA) lives up to his name and blesses a Queen B track with a heavy dose of drums and synth flavors. There’s a big BPM difference between the sides which makes this one a must-have DJ tool. Doubles are recommended!

On a Saturday morning at the start of November 2013, First Word Records took 3 of our favourite producers out of London to spend the day browsing through the vinyl shelves of the biggest record nerd we know - the incomparable Mr Thing. This was the culmination of an idea that first manifested itself on Record Store Day 2012. Like most ideas it was a natural conclusion to a conversation about records and music - kidkanevil had expressed a desire to dig through Mr Thing's sizeable collection for some inspiration. Chatting to Mr Thing it seemed unfair to limit this to only one producer - Tall Black Guy and Eric Lau were top of our wish list. So - a double 7" (Mr Thing would make a beat too - they are his records after all) in time for Record Store Day 2013 (yes, we're a year late). There was however one stipulation about the records from the usually mild-mannered Mr Thing:
'The guys can sample anything they like, but Nothing Leaves The House....'
And who were we to argue.....
The result is four tracks that celebrate our love for record digging, sample chopping and the simple love of a dope beat.


Mr Thing - Changes

"Buckin'" is the first single from Pittsburgh DJ/ musician/ producer Buscrates' sophomore full-length album. The track strongly evokes the likes of Paul Hardcastle, Atmosfear and the Art Of Noise while simultaneously paying homage to the funk/R&B roots of Detroit techno pioneers like Juan Atkins and Derrick May. Packed into only two and a half deliciously tantalizing minutes that leave you wanting more, “Buckin’” sets it off right for those unforgettable summer nights.

Food For Flight Vol.7

Dimensions Recordings’ fifth release sees the label step into the world of the longplayer with Istanbul native, KEREM AKDAG’s self titled debut album.

Kerem has already been winning fans of the ilk of Gilles Peterson through his output of dusty house and tripped out beats in the last few years, and of course via his Getdownsoclose offering on Dimensions’ debut release. His debut album however, sees Kerem deliver a mature piece of work, bright and timeless, equally effective in the club as it is at home and brimming with ideas, hooks and must have songs.

Across eight tracks Kerem demonstrates a breadth of skills that most artists would work a lifetime to achieve. From the stepping beats of When I Think Of You to his subtle vocal layers on Isolated and from the woozy beach vibes of Sultan to the rasping synths of Unite it’s clear that there’s very little that’s outside of Kerem’s arsenal. The album rounds out fittingly with Drums Please, which perfectly displays Kerem’s jazz tendencies, a slow grooving track whose crescendo of stabs and drums create a song that’s more powerful than its parts.

Kerem Akdag’s debut album clearly sets out the stall for a man who has a lot to say and has the capability to say it loud!
