They Cut Down The Mountains (2015)

PROGRAMME NOTE:
Currently underway in China, this piece concerns a number of massive projects involved in moving an unprecedented amount of land - essentially bulldozing entire mountains to make way for new cities. Chinese scientists themselves have already spoken out in warning about a wide array of dangers: increased air pollution, water pollution, soil erosion, land instability, and flooding. While specifically focused on this current event, it is my hope that this project in China can prompt us to consider other projects around the world - and the continually increasing extent to which we are able to modify the very ground beneath us. Intense smog in huge centres like Beijing, stars at night obscured around the world by light pollution, and recent earthquakes in North America apparently induced by hydraulic fracturing, are but some of the massive changes which we are now living with in the 21st century.

Sound of Dragon Ensemble Debut Concert
Sunday April 24, 2016 – 7:00pm, Performance Centre, Roundhouse

The Sound of Dragon Ensemble is a platform for all Chinese instrumentalists in our community to collaborate with each other, and with non-Chinese instrumentalists and composers of various backgrounds. This allows the musicians normally in different ensembles to work together and encourages composers to think outside the existing ensembles to create new instrumentations.
In a recent international call-for-scores, Sound of Dragon received 33 works from composers in 13 countries. We will perform 10 works at the 2nd Sound of Dragon Music Festival on April 24, 2016.

PM2.5 (2016)

An amateur tape piece created during the first summer that I owned a Zoom H4n.

Though the splices and envelopes are inexpertly done, part of me seems to enjoy the roughness of it now. I believe all sounds were recorded in summer 2012 in Nova Scotia - the majority of them from our back yard. The recurring clock recording is of an old multigenerational wooden clock that no one knows the exact age of; I remember wanting to preserve the sound should it ever stop working.

This live recording was taken from the TEMPO NME's spring finale concert, 'In aeternum'. 'The Great Firewall of China' was selected from over 100 submitted pieces as the winner of TEMPO's 2013 call for scores, and then subsequently programmed as the opener to this programme in Maryland.
