Hailed as “a gifted tenor” (China Daily), Lucas van Lierop is a versatile singer, performing in both operas and musical theater shows. His career has spanned more than a decade, originally as a boy soprano, and now as a tenor. In both capacities he has performed with many of Canada’s premiere ensembles and artistic organizations, including the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Vancouver Opera, Opera McGill at the Schulich School, City Opera Vancouver, MusicFest Vancouver, the Vancouver International Song Institute, and Opera on the Avalon. This summer, Lucas performed the role of Oronte in Opera Nuova’s production of “Alcina”, and subsequently, he performed at “I SING BEIJING”, a new operatic training program that focuses on Chinese and Western operatic repertoire. The program involved the intense daily study of Mandarin, coachings with numerous coaches and conductors from the Metropolitan opera, and culminated in a final concert at the Beijing National Centre for the Performing Arts. While in Beijing, Lucas was featured in both print and video interviews for CNTV, CCTV, and the China Daily Newspaper.

Recent concert performances have included Schubert’s “Die Schöne Müllerin”, Schumann’s “Liederkreiss, Op. 24”, “Dichterliebe”, and “Mu Renzhi” from the Chinese Opera “White-Haired Girl”. Last season, Lucas took part in the workshopping of a new opera, “Fallujah”, for City Opera Vancouver. He was recently named, with honorable mentions, in the Ottawa Choral Society’s “New Discoveries” competition, and received a B.C. Gaming Grant from the Vancouver Opera Guild.

In 2001, Lucas made his operatic debut as the spirit in Britten’s “Curlew River”, presented by Festival Vancouver. Since then, he has had the pleasure of working with several prestigious conductors and directors, including Paul Nadler, Peter McClintock, Kristine McIntyre, Katherine Chu, Bramwell Tovey, Bruce Pullan, Patrick Hansen, Julian Wachner, David Gately, and Charles Barber. In the 2009/2010 season, Lucas concentrated on performing numerous song cycles, including Vaughan William’s “Songs of Travel” and “The House of Life”, Schumann’s “Dichterliebe” and “Liederkreiss Op. 39”, Schubert’s “Schwanengesang”, Fauré’s “Poeme d’un jour”, and Beethoven’s “An die ferne Geliebte.”

Born in Hilversum, the Netherlands, Lucas began his musical education at age 3 with violin and piano lessons. In 1995 his family moved to Vancouver, B.C., where he had the great fortune of joining the Vancouver Bach Children’s Chorus under the tutelage of Bruce Pullan. He recently completed his Masters in Vocal Performance at McGill University, studying under the guidance of GRAMMY® award-winning baritone Sanford Sylvan, vocal coach Michael McMahon, conductor Julian Wachner, and director of Opera studies, Patrick Hansen.
