THIS IS A WORK IN PROGRESS! I'm going to spend a lot more time on this one.

I've been meaning to orchestrate this music for decades, since I feel every single remix or orchestration of it has sucked. This is largely due to the popularity of "Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts", the Super Nintendo re-envisoned game, which features a horrible version of the original arcade music (which was present in all other platforms). But it's what most people are familiar with, sadly.

I was inspired mostly by the original arcade version and the Sega Genesis version.

The tempo here is slower at 143 bpm, as in the Sega Genesis version as opposed to the original ~160 bpm. Despite the instrumentation simplicity, the Sega Genesis version leans creepier than the usual clumsy/slapstick approach everyone does, which I find it much more appropriate.

This is my first main attempt at narrowing down the instrumentation and dynamics for this track. This will likely be completely re-done multiple times in the near future, but I figured I would post it here for future reference.

For this test I went with a more laidback "swingy" style in the beginning, but my idea for this track is for it to get progressively darker, and at some point, match the tempo of the arcade version.

By the way, I fully intend to orchestrate the music of levels 2 (The Village of Decay & Destruction) and 5 (The Castle) as well at some point.

It’s been a long time coming, but I’m happy to finally release the first single off of the Doodley Soundtrack.  Starfruit was the first track I wrote for the channel and Doodley came up with the concept of naming each track after a fruit.  Back when I first started writing for Doodley’s channel, I just wanted to make fun little beats for my friend’s small passion project.  I never could’ve imagined that millions of people would come to watch.  What’s crazier is thousands of you would come to my channel just for the music.  It’s been surreal seeing viewers ask where they can find the original music.  I feel so lucky and humbled.  Thank you all so much and Happy 1 year anniversary Doodley!

Starfruit [Doodley Soundtrack, Vol. 1]

In an effort to teach myself LSDJ, I made a version of 'Caro Ortolano', a piece from the 1500s by Italian composer Giorgio Mainerio.

For whatever perverse reason, the idea of using a 2020s hardware recreation of 1990s technology to perform a piece of music from the 1500s was extremely appealing to me... go figure!

Matt Uelman's 12-string guitar theme as you entered Tristram for the first time perfectly set the scene in Diablo 1, and later iterations saw the music become even creepier and epic! I'm not sure if I've been able to capture the majesty of the originals, but I sure enjoyed making it.
