A very young Harold Wright performs the 'Brahms Trio in A minor Op.114', with his fellow Curtis Institute class mates, 1949/50. It is fascinating to observe how much of Harold's distinctive tone and also his style of musicianship was already evident here, prior to his first orchestral position in Houston.

This concert was performed at Jordan Hall (NEC) on March 2, 1975. The composer Oliver Messiaen was present and his wife Yvonne Loriod performed on piano. The other performers were Harold Wright (clarinet), Joe Silverstein (violin)and Jules Eskin (cello). This recording is from a radio broadcast of that concert.

Among many other achievements, Artie Middleton was Principal Trombone of the Vienna Philharmonic, The Vienna State Opera and the Munich Philharmonic. He passed away on the 3rd April 2022. Arthur Harold Middleton Jrn. changed lives and enriched everybody who crossed his path. He was greatly loved and appreciated by his many friends, students and colleagues and I both loved and treasured him. Lucia

The greatest classical clarinetist to ever have walked the earth, indeed one of the greatest classical musicians of all time,  the unequalled, Harold Scull Wright, gives a lecture on clarinet articulation at the National Clarinet Clinic in Denver, 1970.

With credit and much gratitude, to the late Frank Stachow, Professor of Clarinet at Lebanon Valley College, who recorded the original reel. Thank you so much Frank.

Harold Wright Articulation Lecture: 1970: National Clarinet Clinic: Denver Colorado

The Greatest Harold Wright performs his 1969 Guest Faculty Recital at The National Clarinet Clinic at the University of Denver. Harold appeared at the clinic, courtesy of The Carl Fischer Music Company and this was recorded just prior to him commencing his Principal Chair in Boston.

Accompanist: The scheduled accompanist was Dr. Walter Schenkman, however a change was made at last minute and the accompanist is unknown.

PROGRAM

1. Mozart- Concerto Rondo in Bb Major 

2. Saint-Saëns - Sonata Op. 167

3. Tomasi- 'Introduction Et Danse'

4. Pulcinello- Bozza

5. Brahms - Sonata in F minor (incomplete due to reel)

This find and it's restoration is warmly dedicated to my very best friend in the entire galaxy, John C. Fullam, ex Principal Clarinetist of The Buffalo Philharmonic, whose extraordinary passion for both Harold Wright and Ralph McLane, we both agree, is only equaled in it's size and in it's nature, by mine, and whose love for Harold inspired the biography in process.

My sincere thanks and gratitude to the late Frank Stachow, Professor of Clarinet at Lebanon Valley College, who recorded the original reel. The reel was damaged and has been restored and digitized by Lucia McClarinet as part of the Harold Wright and Ralph McLane Initiatives. It was cut and re-reeled in order to allow it to run consistently at speed. Pitch is as close as is possible (recorded using 60 Hz not 50). Sound has also been cleaned up with underlying whirring and buzzing removed. 

Repairing this was a feat and a half and took a lot of patience, but I am thrilled with the result given what we went through to get here.
