NTS Radio - Panorama Yerevan 12th March 2023 - Armenian Folk Special: Work Songs

My grandfather, Martin Vardazaryan, Armenian composer and jazz musician, has recently celebrated his 85th Birthday! Author of numerous film scores, including the famed Soviet Armenian movie "Hello, that's me" or "Բարև, ես եմ" 1965, he started his career in the 1950s as a pianist and graduated from Armenian State Conservatory as a composer. Apart from theater and cinema music, he has also composed several pop-jazz songs performed by famous Armenian singers like Raisa Mkrchyan and Tatevik Hovhannisyan, and recorded with the Armenian Estrada Orchestra and TV and Television Orchestra of Armenia where he also served as a conductor. 

I made a one-hour show dedicated to his works, from estrada and lyrical songs to short suites that I have found in the archives of Republic Radio and that have not been publicly released. You will also hear some of his film scores!  I compiled the show with care and love, my granda dis the best. <3 Hope you enjoy!

In this episode I am telling (very brifely) the history of Armenian Jazz from the day of its foundation in 1936 by my great grandfather Tsolak Vardazaryan to the beginning of 2000s rising ethno jazz. It's a very special episode to me, with the picture from a family archive (Tsolak Vardazaryan and his orchestra dating 1936) with a lot of unique material from the archives of the Public Radio of Armenia, and my personal collection that I have never played before. Big band, symphonic jazz, jazz songs, beautiful vocals and many moe inside. Armenian Liturgy for Palestine on Radio Alhara is a sonic statement of grieving over the interwoven histories of displacement and shared histories of genocide and the ongoing, repeated genocide that needs to come to an end.

"Armenia became the first country in the world to adopt Christianity as the state religion in the early fourth century, and Armenian pilgrims flocked to Jerusalem for its religious significance; some permanently settled there. Jerusalemite Armenians are thought to form the oldest-surviving Armenian community in the diaspora.
By the 13th century, Armenian churches were built, including the St. James Monastery, which was built on the remains of a fifth-century church, on a site that was identified as the burial place of the first bishop of Jerusalem (St. James Minor), and around which an Armenian quarter slowly developed. The monastery served as a refuge for the Armenian poor; a hospice was later attached to the monastery, further solidifying the community’s relationship with their church. A secular Armenian community of merchants and artisans also settled in the city and contributed to its cultural legacy by establishing and leading several crafts such as manuscript production, ceramic arts, and photography. According to an Ottoman census, between 2,000 and 3,000 Armenians lived in Palestine prior to World War I; most of them were in Jerusalem. However, their numbers dramatically increased beginning in 1915, as genocide survivors from other parts of the Ottoman Empire sought refuge in Palestine and Jerusalem, mainly in the Armenian Quarter of the Old City. 


Immediately after the end of the British Mandate of Palestine in May 1948, witnessed the forced flight of 750,000 to 950,000 Palestinian Arabs from western Palestine as they were driven out of their homeland and ancestral lands. Among the dispossessed Palestinians were Armenians some of whom moved to neighboring countries or sought shelter in the overcrowded Armenian Convent in Jerusalem.

In the recent years Community members of Jerusalem’s Armenian Quarter have been repeatedly attacked by extremist settlers."

NTS Radio Panorama Yerevan - Armenian Classical Special

In this episode Lucia Kagramanyan delves deep into the Armenian lullaby tradition and the authorship of women behind this ancient craft, and transmission of sorrow, trauma and joys of Armenian people reflected in it. Hear lullabies from different parts of Western and Eastern Armenia following folk tradition as well as lullabies in classical pop, opera from the Soviet period.

The project is curated by League of Tenders, as a part of Vleeshal's Nomadic Program 2024–2025, entitled “Repetition is a Form of Changing.” Vleeshal is a center for contemporary art in Middelburg, the Netherlands, recognized for versatile, vibrant, and vital projects presented both within the walls of its unique Gothic exhibition space and beyond.

In Her Voice, artist and sound researcher Lucia Kagramanyan explored the rich tradition of Armenian lullabies to show how women's voices could be a powerful tool for knowledge production and its intergenerational transmission, even if the names of thousands and thousands of these women are unknown.

This episode is a more elaborative attempt to shed light on the mystery of Armenian lullabies. Lucia Kagramanyan speaks based on her research and interviews with women researchers and folk singers, and mothers, playing some rare and popular Armenian lullabies. 
She asked mothers to share their experiences on composing/singing lullabies, and many magically performed their own compositions they put their babies asleep with - one of the most intimate and beautiful moments of the bond between a child and a mother, the world, the present, and the future.

Her Voice was part of Vleeshal’s International Nomadic Program 2024-2025 Repetition is a Form of Changing organized by League of Tenders. It continued the First Season of the program Her Right devoted to decolonial approaches to feminism and questioning it from non-western perspectives.
