루시드폴 Lucid Fall - 그리고 눈이 내린다. (데모) Samba de inverno demo

This piece was made from my Rhodes piano (Rhodes Mark I) alone, manufactured in 1978.
This spring, I walked in a pool almost every day to exercise. During these walks, the thought came to me: why is it that these numerous repetitions in nature do not seem monotonous? Why is it that these repetitions without repetitions seem so similar yet so different at the same time? Since I did not use a metronome when playing the music, the many loops in the music all have different tempos. Since there is no set tempo, the music never gets off-tempo. The melody loop is played using a “Blooper” and an old Joemeek preamp, and not played in a copy and paste fashion. A monophonic loop, a loop randomly generated by Blooper, and a loop whose sound is widened and transformed by various effectors all pile up on one another and lead the music somewhere. It seems like this music, where the beginning and the end touch each other, becomes an 8 minute 30 second loop in itself.

이 곡은 1978년에 태어난 로즈 (Rhodes Mark I) 피아노 하나로 만들어졌습니다. 
올 봄, 거의 매일 물 속을 걸으며 운동을 했습니다. 수영장을 빙빙 돌면서 이런 생각을 했습니다. 자연에 존재하는 수많은 ‘반복’은 왜 단조롭지 않을까. 똑같은 듯 똑같지 않은 이 ‘반복 없는 반복’들은 어째서 여여하고 다채로울까. 메트로놈에 기대지 않고 녹음을 했기 때문에 곡 속의 수많은 루프(loop)들은 모두 템포가 다릅니다. 정해진 템포가 없으니, 템포가 어긋날 일도 없었습니다. 멜로디 루프는 ‘카피-앤-페이스트’가 아닌, ‘Blooper’라는 페달과 낡은 조믹 (Joemeek) 프리앰프를 거쳐 녹음되었습니다. 단선율의 루프, Blooper가 랜덤하게 조합한 루프, 여러 이펙터로 소리의 폭을 넓히거나 변형한 루프가 뒤섞여 쌓이면서 곡은 어딘가로 향해 갑니다. 시작과 끝이 맞닿은 이 곡은, 그 자체로 또 하나의 긴, 8분 30초 짜리 루프가 되어버린 것 같기도 합니다.

Can I call music that I didn't write myself mine? Can I call music that does not originate from my mind and body still mine? Can I call music that I create by chance mine? This piece originated from Brian Eno's app. The only thing I can do is 'triggering.' I don't know what notes will come out or what patterns will be created with the music that is generated. The only thing I know is that sound will not stop until I turn off the power.
Just like that, I started layering several of these simple melodies together and continued to work. I recorded a monophonic Rhodes tone and added a synthesizer pad to it. The pad itself was filtered and modulated through a modular synthesizer. As my fingers freely switched between digital-analog-digital-analog domains several times, the sound continued to evolve. When you overlap sounds in multiple layers, you often encounter many intriguing moments. Sometimes, (you think) you hear notes that aren't there; other times the overlapping sounds create a totally new texture.
In all honesty, I can hardly recall the details surrounding which works I've done, how I did them, and how many times I've done them. Again and again, I felt that I was drawn towards something - something that seemed static at the microscopic level but nonetheless underwent large changes and flowed strongly. Much like the seasons, tides, the history of the world, a healing wound, or my aging face.

내가 만들어내지 않은 음률은 내 것일까. 내 마음과 몸에서 비롯되지 않은 음악은 내 것이 아닐까. 우연히 건드린 소리는 나의 것일까, 아닐까. 이 곡은 브라이언 이노(Brian Eno)의 앱에서 시작되었습니다. 내가 할 수 있는 것은 ‘시작하는 것’ (triggering) 밖에는 없습니다. 어떤 음가가 나올 지, 어떤 패턴으로 진행될지 저는 알 수 없습니다. 다만 전원을 끄기 전까지 소리는 멈추지 않으리라는 것만 알 뿐입니다. 
그렇게 시작된 (triggered), 지극히 단순한 음률을 몇몇 층위로 담아두고 작업을 이어갔습니다 - 단선율의 로즈 소리를 녹음하고, 신시사이저 패드를 입혔습니다. 패드는 모듈러 신시사이저의 필터링과 모듈레이션을 거쳤는데 손이 가는대로 디지털-아날로그-디지털-아날로그 도메인을 여러 번 넘나들다보니 소리가 계속 변해갔습니다. 여러 레이어로 소리를 겹치다보면 재미있는 순간이 찾아올 때가 있습니다. 짚지 않은 음가가 들리는 (듯한) 경우도 있고, 겹쳐진 소리들이 전혀 다른 질감으로 변하기도 합니다. 
솔직히, 몇 번에 걸쳐 어떤 작업을 어떻게 했었는지도 잘 기억나지 않습니다. 다만, 미시적으로 바라보면 변하지 않는 듯 해도 어느새 큰 변화로 이끌리는, 거대하게 흐르는 그 ‘무언가’가 자꾸만 떠오른 것 같습니다. 아마도 계절, 조수, 세상의 역사, 아물어 가는 상처, 혹은 나이 들어 가는 나의 얼굴 같은, 그런 것들이겠지요.

The synthesizer, the Jin-Gyul tree (citrus sunki hort. ex Tanaka), and myself - this piece is an improvised combination of the three. I ran sounds from the software 'Fundamental' through various settings according to a probabilistic algorithm and recorded them. I took the electrical signals of a citrus tree and converted them into MIDI notes, recording them thereafter. I realized that the tree was different from other random signal generators. It was very sensitive to, and interacted with the various stimuli around it. Its patterns differed completely from one day to the next. It would be completely silent for tens of seconds, before suddenly bursting into chatty sounds. It was impossible to predict what sounds it would produce - something that you cannot expect from machines. I took the MIDI notes thus acquired and recorded them in the voices of virtual instruments. I finished the recording by layering on my own sounds - sounds that I improvised while I listening to these sounds I had already recorded.

신시사이저와 진귤 나무(Citrus sunki hort. ex Tanaka), 그리고 저까지- 셋의 즉흥 연주가 합쳐진 곡입니다. ‘Fundamental' 이라는 소프트웨어의 소리를 여러 가지 세팅의 확률 알고리즘에 따라 녹음했습니다. 그리고 진귤 나무의 전기 신호를 받아 미디 노트로 기록했습니다. 나무는 여타 다른 랜덤 시그널 제네레이터와 다르다는 걸 알았습니다. 주변의 여러가지 자극에 매우 민감하고 상호적으로 반응했기 때문입니다. 이틀에 걸친 연주 패턴도 서로 완전히 달랐습니다. 신호를 내고 싶지 않을 때엔 몇 십초 넘게 가만히 있다가 갑자기 수다스럽게 소리를 낸다든지, 기계에선 기대할 수 없는 패턴으로 연주를 했습니다. 이렇게 녹음해 둔 미디 노트를 몇 가지 가상 악기 음색으로 구현했습니다. 저는 이렇게 녹음된 음악을 들으며 여러 레이어의 소리를 즉흥적으로 덧입혀 녹음을 마무리 했습니다.

B1 Moment In Love

My orchard is a noisy one filled with all kinds of machine sounds. When they hear the word "orchard," city dwellers may only imagine scenes of serenity and peace. In fact, that was the case when I first came here. However, over time, this place too came to bow down before the frenzy of development. For years, and still to this day, developers dig up the ground, break apart stones, cut down trees, and build up houses - working without rest.
 Yet still, many creatures continue to visit my orchard. Pheasants, white-eyes, cuckoos, and even snakes come by. The songs of buntings and goldfinches pierce through the cacophony of human beings. Fireflies join in as well. They all use my orchard as a shelter, building nests and giving birth in it. 
This piece starts with the sounds of a mechanical digger that I recorded in my orchard. Defenseless against this, I intend to make my music incorporating these roaring/thunderous noises. That seems to be the only way that I can resist against these evils and find solace.

저의 과수원은 온갖 기계 소리로 시끄럽습니다. 도시 사람들은 과수원이라 하면 고요하고 평화로운 풍경만 상상할 지도 모르겠습니다. 사실 처음 이 곳에 왔을 때만해도 그랬습니다. 하지만 어느새 이 곳도 개발의 광풍 앞에서 무력해져, 어떤 사람들은 휴일도 없이 땅을 파고 돌을 깨고 나무를 베고 집을 지어 올립니다.
그래도 여전히 많은 생물들이 저의 과수원에 찾아옵니다. 꿩도 오고 동박새도 오고 뱀도 오고 두견이와 뻐꾸기도 옵니다. 인간의 굉음을 뚫고 멧새와 방울새도 노래를 합니다. 반딧불이도 찾아옵니다. 모두 저의 과수원을 은신처로 삼은 듯, 둥지를 틀고 새끼를 낳으며 삶을 이어갑니다.
이 곡은 과수원에서 녹음한 포크레인 소리로 시작됩니다. 무력한 저는, 이런 굉음들을 녹음해서 음악으로 만들어내는 작업을 해나갈 생각입니다. 그게 제가 할 수 있는 유일한 저항이자 치유의 방법인 것 같습니다.
