As I spoke with Attila "Kevin" Fodor, aka Fine Cut Bodies, I quickly realized that he lies almost entirely outside the realm of dance music. The Hungarian expat, now living in LA, is almost the polar opposite of today's prototypical bedroom producer. Kevin approaches electronic production from an absolute musical perspective, fastidiously creating only the most relevant, effective timbres for his compositions. He dwells in and out of an enormous range of tempos and styles, holding little regard for popular genres. And, perhaps most remarkably, he has an astonishingly intimate familiarity with sound design, the lifeblood of electronic production.

Fine Cut Bodies' newest EP displays a characteristic (and peculiarly uncommon) decoupling of electronic music production from dance music sensibilities. Paper Tales is primarily a cinematic work, drawing on Kevin's background as a film and TV producer with its dizzyingly complex soundscapes and eclectic range of timbres. When the EP does lean in a danceable direction, it's in the form of a psychedelic blend of glitch hop, a genre that tends to draw in some of the most extreme connoisseurs of sound design, possibly because of the rewarding technical challenge it can present producers. But this is not to say that Fine Cut Bodies seems to have sacrificed musicality for technicality; the EP's complexity is a purely musical tool that drenches passages in a dark, off-kilter bent.

Fine Cut Bodies' scope as a musician seems to know no bounds. Not only is he clearly a technically adept producer, but he also sports an extensive background as a DJ, with a formidable 700+ hours of radio show coverage over the past 15 years. Kevin was kind enough to grace Versace Lettuce with one of these mixes. This particular collection of tracks takes the form of a sonic adventure exploring the bounds of Paper Tales, with a couple tracks from the EP and a musical ethos that generally centers around Paper Tales' dark, nightmarish style.
