Actor Martin Sheen as you've never heard him before. He has appeared in over 100 films, including Apocalypse Now. He’s best known on television as President Bartlet in seven seasons of The West Wing. But Martin Sheen, born and still legally named Ramón Estévez, has had another lesser-known life as a spiritual seeker and activist. He returned to a deep and joyful Catholic faith after a crisis at the height of his fame in in mid-life. He’s been arrested over 60 times in vigils and protests. "Piety is something you do alone," he says. "True freedom, spirituality, can only be achieved in community."

In this episode I interview philosopher Evan Thompson, who is a Professor of Philosophy at University of British Columbia, mainly in the fields of cognitive science, philosophy of mind and Phenomenology. He is the author of the book Waking, Dreaming, Being: Self and Consciousness in Neuroscience, Meditation, and Philosophy. We discuss a wide range of topics, the aspects of consciousness in sleep and lucid dreaming, various scientific studies, meditation as well as get into some geeky philosophical pondering on dreams and the nature of the sense of self.

As a kid I used to have many lucid dreams before ever knowing what a Lucid Dream really is. I thought it was natural, and though it wasn’t very common, it was one of my favorite experiences. Beyond the exhilaration of lucidity or the experience of flying, for a kid with a lot of nightmares lucidity proven to be very useful in dealing with the horror of bad dreams.

Years later when discovering all the research and science behind lucid dreaming while at the same time picking up a meditation practice I started to realize that is much more to lucid dreams than the crazy fun experience of controlling your dreams. When I learned that Buddhist monks have been cultivating lucid dreaming for over 2000 years in a practice called Dream Yoga, I found out there seemed to be an aspect to the practice that gives you insight and access to your psyche and subconscious, and when taken to the farther reaches of it’s potential, lucid dreams can act as a window into the nature of consciousness itself.
