Burnt Offerings

Another track written early on during the sessions for The Labyrinth Of The Straight Line.Had the trumpet/brass experiment for a few years but didn't work on it until 2014.Not entirely successful, it didn't make the cut for the album but it might make a decent compilation track somewhere... the title comes from the work of pioneering psychiatrist R.D. Laing.

"Laing never denied the existence of mental illness, but viewed it in a radically different light from his contemporaries. For Laing, mental illness could be a transformative episode whereby the process of undergoing mental distress was compared to a shamanic journey. The traveller could return from the journey with (supposedly) important insights, and may have become (in the views of Laing and his followers) a wiser and more grounded person as a result."

An Incompatible Knot

This is an oldish and mostly unheard track cobbled together from disparate sound experiments and incorporating some current and ex-band members (Shrill, Dan Knowler, Gary Jeff) It has never fitted into any idea i've had for an album but still has it's moments. It was submitted and accepted for Stuart Mclean's Dark Outside project in the Scottish Borders last year (2014.)

Sound artist Stuart McLean is working on collecting original, never-before-heard music for a blowout radio broadcast. It’s going to be an amazing show. And if you want to hear, it you have to journey to one of the darkest places in Scotland.

McLean's project, Dark.Outside., explores the concept of content sharing and how easy it is to access pretty much anything online. McLean is in the process of collecting unreleased music for the third annual Dark.Outside. and will use an FM transmitter to broadcast the jams he collects into Scotland’s Galloway Forest Dark Skies Park on the day of Sept. 27. You can’t tune in without getting off the couch and trekking to the forest.

Treebone Fire

Lin-Lith-Gow, old Brythonic Celtic which roughly translates as Loch In The Hollow.Place of my birth.I was Born in a council house within the town boundaries which makes me a Black Bitch.The black bitch is on the heraldic coat of arms for this ancient town. One of the mythologies was that it once saved the day by barking whilst tied to a tree on an island on the loch and prevented an invading force from a successful raid .Conversely, that said dog saved her “master” by bringing him food when he was tied to the tree and ended up tethered herself. This piece has hardly ever been shared.

The burgh's coat of arms features a black bitch chained to an oak tree on an island, and townsfolk* are known as "black bitches". In his account of a tour of Scotland, published in 1679, an English gentleman, Thomas Kirk, described the arms of the town as "a black bitch tied to a tree, in a floating island. We enquired for a story about it, but could meet with none: their schoolmaster told us it proceeded from the name of the place. Linlithgow, in Erst [ Scottish Gaelic ], is thus explained: Lin signifies Lough; Lith, black; and Gow, a hound."[6] However, the actual derivation is from the Brythonic words llyn, llaith, and cau, 'the waterpool in the basin' or 'the waterpool in the valley'.

*[incorrect as only those actually born within the town boundaries are traditionally referred to as black bitches]

A more recently recorded legend relates that the bitch was a black greyhound whose master was sentenced to starve to death on an island in Linlithgow loch. She used to swim from the town every day with food for him. When this was discovered she was chained to a tree on a different island to suffer the same fate as her master. The townspeople took the animal's loyalty and bravery as symbolic of their own. The local pub named "The Black Bitch" is reputed to be one of Scotland's oldest pubs.

Loch In The Hollow

Another track which never really seemed to fit anywhere, though i was at one point tempted to release a compilation of such tracks entitled "Cross Quarter Days" but in the end i felt they all just fell short of release quality.It's far too easy to issue everything you record, much better to only release the best stuff, to show a bit of discernment etc. nb> this track was recorded on logic audio using the surround sound function, sadly i don't have a surround sound system to play it back on...

Buried Languages

This remix for Pure's No End Of Vinyl album was pivotal in the beginning of the Labyrinth sessions.I always considered it a key track but somehow it was overtaken by other pieces that made more fundamental sense to the project.Still love it though and was chuffed to be a part of Pure's incredible album.The original album The End Of Vinyl came out on Mego in 1999 and this remix album featuring Christoph De Babalon, Pita, Rashad Becker, Goner, Arturas Bumšteinas , Current 909 & others was issued in 2013 on Crónica.The recording of Miyamizu was also the absolute signal for the beginning of The Labyrinth Of The Straight Line.It certainly served it's purpose and put me on the right track.Thank you Peter Pure.

"Miyamizu - Heavenly Water

Water is the main ingredient in all sake but it usually gets the least attention. Despite this, water is important and does play a huge role in the quality of sake. The story that is told to demonstrate this fact is told so often that it has become like a legend.

Back near the end of the Edo period, 1840, Yamamura Tazaemon owned two breweries. One in Nishinomiya and the other in Uozaki. Tazaemon-san noticed that the sake made at Nishinomiya was always better than that made at Uosaki.

Tazaemon-san struggled to figure out why the sake at Nishinomiya was in fact better. He ensured that they used the same rice, milled to the same level, the same conditions and equipment; nothing helped the Uozaki brewery to produce sake that was as good as that of Nishinomiya. Tazaemon-san even switched the brew masters but not even this helped. One day, Tazaemon-san, had the water used at Nishinomiya shipped to his Uozaki brewery. Sake was brewed using this water and it was as good as the sake made at Nishinomiya. Tazaemon-san had solved the mystery, it was the water!

Those in the Nada region would say that it is a hard water that matches the heavenly water, miyamizu. Mineral rich waters produce sakes with quick strong fermentations and are strongly flavoured with full bodies."
