New York based percussionist and composer Eli Keszler is set to release his new album Icons on June 25 via LuckyMe. Icons is an immersive work in perpetual motion, evoking a glorious and dystopian western world. Known as a frequent collaborator to Oneohtrix Point Never, Laurel Halo, Kevin Beasley, and Rashad Becker, Keszler’s latest solo venture offers up a latticework of melodic percussion, drum set, and electro-acoustic instrumentation, built upon fragments of American abstraction, ancient scales, industrial percussion, and jazz-age film noir to achieve its feeling of imperial decay. Keszler’s instrumental performances are framed by panoramic recordings of New York City and the Odyssey Cave, along with other on-location audio from his global travels, defining an expansive music that takes on hyperreal forms difficult to describe outside of the loss and wonderment that defines our age.

“Icons is the music I made during a time where travel and trade were effectively suspended,” states Keszler. “I spent nights wandering around Manhattan collecting recordings of the empty and silent city where a car alarm was audible from blocks away, where the hum of the electrical grid and the clash of bicycle gears suddenly occupied a massive amount of space. I spent the entirety of that year in Manhattan, probably the longest I’ve stayed in one place in over a decade. The island was essentially shut down and running at an erratic pace. The speed of the city seemed to oscillate from intense speed - ambulances, protests, helicopters —  to near stasis — a sort of beautiful, strange, serene stillness. I saw something strange and beautiful happening: power cracking and people changing. With Icons, I was working with these mythological tropes that are deteriorating and decaying before our eyes to create a music that finds beauty in our fragile and unstable reality. 

Keszler has released music on Shelter Press, Empty Editions, ESP Disk and PAN. His 2018 album Stadium was awarded Boomkat’s Album Of The Year.  Most recently, Keszler wrote the original score to Dasha Nekrasova’s feature The Scary of Sixty First (which made its recent premiere at Berlin Film Festival) and contributed to Daniel Lopatin's original score for Josh and Benny Safdie's Uncut Gems. Keszler’s music, installation, and visual work have appeared at the Whitney Museum, Lincoln Center, MIT List Center, Victoria & Albert Museum, Sculpture Center, The Kitchen, South London Gallery, Hessel Museum, Harvard's Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts, Luma-Foundation, Barbican, Walker Art Center, and MoMA PS1.

His album ‘Stadium’ released on Shelter Press was awarded Boomkat’s 2018 Album Of The Year. Frequent collaborator to Oneohtrix Point Never, Laurel Halo, and Rashad Becker – Keszler’s has shown and performed at The Lincoln Center, Victoria & Albert Museum, MoMA PS1, and The Barbican. He has worked across music, film and art, and has had exhibitions at the South London Gallery, MIT List Center and collaborated with Turner Prize winning artist Laure Prouvost and Kevin Beasley. Keszler has written the original score to Dasha Nekrasova’s feature The Scary of Sixty First that premiered this year at the Berlin Film Festival, and his other film work includes contributions to Daniel Lopatin's score for the Safdie Brother’s acclaimed, Uncut Gems. Keszler's new album, ‘Icons’ builds upon fragments of American abstraction, dreamlike ancient melodicism, industrial percussion, jazz age film noir and imperial decay. The music takes on forms difficult to describe outside an articulation of the loss and wonderment that defines our age.

Static Doesn't Exist

2021 and another year done… omicron surging through my veins as i write this. Man, every year we ask the team to send us their tracks at Halloween and every year we’re chopping and changing moments before launch. But that’s how it’s gotta be and that’s what’s so vital about this series, now in its 12th year. This never gets more relaxed. We should probably be spending this time of year chilling out and reflecting on what’s coming over the horizon but vinyl lead times already got us making records for July. It’s like the digital and the physical world are pulling further and further apart.

We hope you love this compilation as much as we do. Thanks to the artists and everyone involved in getting this together. Special shout out to Scott Pilgrim, Leo Martin, Issac Larose and Emmanuel Mauriès-Rinfret for their images and code. Cameron Morse, Abdullah Al Wali, Albert Carter Philips and Jennifer Metcalf. Australian-born, New York-based producer BRUX steps onto LUCKYME® with a hard-hitting debut single, ‘CA$HED UP’, featuring Baauer and Surya Sen. The first single from her forthcoming EP on the label.

Fuelled by the aggressions of New York City life, ‘CA$HED UP’ captures the frustration, noise, and urgency of living on the edge. BRUX and Surya Sen trade hypnotic vocal mantras - “cashed up… washed out… fired up… burnt out…” - over cash register glitches, ticking percussion, and corporate-slick pads, before the track explodes into a chaotic blend of clattering drums and heavy bass.

“This tune came about spontaneously during a writing session with Harry (Baauer) in an 1800s historic carriage house in the Lower East Side of Manhattan,” BRUX shares. “It reflects the strong energy I feel in this city—loud, relentless, and raw. Surya Sen jumped on the hook, and his vocals perfectly add to the grittiness of the track.”
