2020 IN AND OUT

Going way back to the turn of the millennium with my brother Chris Annibell aka Osiris & Mino Cinelo. Here was our typical day in Brooklyn 2000. I was making coffee's at The Bergen Beat Cafe, Brooklyn. Chris comes over we talk shop for a few hours about music, parties, politics. We go to Pizzatown on 5th ave, grab 2 slices each & talk shop with Nick & Vinny. Then we walk go to Chris' house with some samples, flip on the MPC 2000 to chop samples & mess with beats... bring those back to my place & mess with the ASR-10 keys. Lastly, we record it all to my VS-880 about 50 times turning things up & then down & then up again. Lastly, we record Mino Cinelu when everyone was out of the apartment & things were quiet.  We mix it all down again & again until it was time to master it at Ron's Atlantic West Studios. Then, test it in the car & in the clubs about a week... make more changes & make the artwork & the jump photos! Belgium's Billie Holiday” remixed by a Japanese band in a style that has more than a hint of Brazil? Yes, that's right, we're deep into Gilles Peterson's world here. This beautiful and tripped-out percussive groover is the first taste of a new Melanie de Biasio remix compilation compiled by Peterson out in February which features a killer lineup of remixers including Jonwayne, Clap! Clap!, Seven Davis Jr, plus Gilles himself in a studio team-up with Simbad. If this blend of de Biasio's velvet voice and Toshio Matsuura's enveloping production is anything to go by it's going to be a killer.

Transgressive Records have announced details of a very special Songhoy Blues release. Available digitally, the single features a Julian Casablancas edit of Petit Metier and a live version of Al Hassidi Terei, recorded at their sold-out London Koko show in November of last year.

The band re-recorded the vocals for Petit Metier last August and Casablancas has been working on the new production with engineer and mixer Shaun Everett (Alabama Shakes / Weezer) while Al Hassidi Terei was mixed by the band’s front-of-house engineer Leon Pearce and perfectly captures the live energy of the bands incendiary performances.

Having fallen for the band in 2014, Casablancas invited the band to tour with his band The Voidz in November 2014. His label, Cult Records, subsequently partnered Atlantic Records in the U.S. to release their debut album, Music In Exile, in 2015.

Cult Records will also subsequently release the single as a limited edition 7” in the U.S. 

Additionally, this week the band have been announced as winners in the ‘Newcomer’ category at the 2016 Songlines Awards. The band were previously nominated in the ‘Best New Band’ category at last 

Finally, having made their first appearance in London in July 2014 at the Servants Jazz Quarters, the band play The Roundhouse in London at the end of this month on Saturday 21st May 2016 – a staggering ascent for any band. 

The show billed as ‘Songhoy Blues presents ‘Music in Exile’ - a celebration of music from Mali and beyond’, also features a performance from special guest FATOUMATA DIAWARA and appearances from Blick Bassy and United Vibrations and a DJ set from The Invisible’s Dave Okumu.

Between 2006 and 2008 i (Tonic) made a few edits on a label called 'Mindless Boogie' under a few different names (Tonic, Skinny Joey, Rubber Room). The label was vinyl only, so the tracks are pretty hard to find by now. It's a shame to let them go to waste, so here they are... Go and multiply!

Phonica Special Editions follow up their inaugural release with an EP featuring three
remixes of singer, producer and Toronto native, Sandro Perri. Sandro has released more
than a dozen solo and collaborative records under his given name as well as under the
Polmo Polpo & Glissandro 70 monikers, mainly on Canadian cult imprint Constellation.

“Love & Light / The Drums Remixes” features reworks from Worst friends Tom Croose
and Slow Hands. Fresh from his recent outing on Resista, Tom Croose is kept busy with
not one, but two remixes of mr Perri. First up and taking up the whole of side A, “Love &
Light” – originally on 2011’s “Impossible Spaces” – gets a subtle electronic re-rub with
restrained electronic flourishes that gently complement the original's organic, ethereal
sound – a weirdly captivating, mystical trip! All that, while getting boosted from a
criminally short three and a half minutes to a more respectable nine plus…

Next up is Slow Hands, Tom Croose’s partner in Worst Friends who has released on
Wolf+Lamb. He takes “The Drums” (a track from Sandro’s debut album “Tiny Mirrors”) to
places where it’s never been before. by re-imagining the song into a breezy summer
anthem where old school electric piano stabs, handclaps and a general feel-good vibes
take centre stage.

Rounding off this excellent remix 12” we have Tom Croose again, who returns for
another version of “The Drums” and harmoniously marries synth riffs and a laid back
groove with Sandro’s signature contemplative vocal, rounding off this excellent remix
package in style.

Pressed on limited quantity 180g vinyl with high quality full colour sleeve.
