Such a beautiful song originally performed by one of my all time favourite singers, Otis Reading. I've given it more of a Country spin.

Let this song take you on a journey through a musical maze, with one turn leading you to a melancholic love song; the next, you're faced with a mirror, forcing you to take a good hard look at yourself; and finally, to a polyphonic vocal composition, fit for an angel's ears. 


The song begins with a simple acoustic guitar, strumming away gently, before a sweet vocal enters the soundscape. We immediately receive an image of a woman in a relationship, feeling neglected while her partner's eyes are glued to a screen.


A theme throughout the song, is this woman needing to constantly repeat herself, as her partner is too distracted to listen. The lyrics cleverly demonstrate her frustration at having to do this, and will no doubt have the listener reflecting on their own relationship with modern technology. 


In a stroke of production genius, the backing vocals begin to repeat what the main vocal has just said, creating a perpetual canon of sorts. This coincides with the introduction of a bass riff, giving the song a bit of bounce. The dreamy cadence of her voice flows effortlessly over the instruments, and her captivating harmonies add to the wistful mood of the song.


Musically, this indie/alt-pop triumph, is moderately stripped back. Teaming acoustic guitar, bass and percussion, with a simple, yet emotive flute, brilliantly mirroring the heartache which is entrenched in the lyrics. In just under 5 minutes, a message as relatable as this, will have the listener wiping away a tear, and doing some soul searching of their own.

Hear this dance classic, from the naughties in a whole new light. This stripped back, acoustic version, still packs a punch, despite swapping a funky bass line, for a flowy, guitar and vocal combination. The best thing is this version really showcases the beautiful lyrics, about Love and escaping reality with that special someone.

Another One For The Road

Lucy Dunleavy is a London born singer-songwriter, now living in Bristol. Her work is very much based around folk, country and blues, although her lyrical style, mirrors the many genres of music which inspire her. Be it hip hop, techno, drum and bass, pop, indie or rock, she will bop to it all.

One common theme throughout all of Lucy's work is an honest vocal style, harmonies and meaty lyrics, full of double entendres.
