VRIL debuted on the Delsin-label with his excellent Vortekz EP early in 2014, which came after releases on his family-label Giegling and also Semantica in previous years, and was followed up by the Torus LP, a double 12” on Giegling affiliate Forum. Now he's back with his second full length.

Pact Infernal's debut release 'The Descent [Chapter I] arrived in early 2015 on Samurai Horo. A slow flock of unexpected, but very welcomed, fans from outside of the labels normal market began to build. One of the more exciting admirers of the Pact Infernal EP was Berlin based Lucy who offered to rework 'Chapter I' into his own stylistic interpretations. The resultant 2 remixes incorporate elements from all 4 tracks on the first EP into 2 long pulsing, hypnotic grooves. If subtlety was the main instrument of the originals, Lucy's versions refine that instrument into a new form and sprinkle carefully plucked references delicately around his sinuous rhythms. Over 25 minutes of delightful audio hypnosis from one of the electronic worlds favourite individual voices.

Sebastian Mullaert and Kontra-Musik have been involved in a love affair for quite some time – an affair that even resulted in an offspring called The Dance that came out on Kontra-Musik last year. Sebastian Mullaert is of course first of all known as half of Minilogue, a duo so influential in the hypnotic field of techno that Korg recently named a synthesizer after them. Lately, Sebastian has focused on his solo path under the Wa Wu We moniker, releasing stripped back and personal music on his own Wa Wu We label, the cryptic S.E.L.F label and now on Kontra-Musik.

On the title track Travellers, Sebastian Mullaert uses a straight up techno formula that may surprise listeners who haven’t followed his move into Wa Wu We territory. You almost get the impression Sebastian buried a recording destined for a rigid techno label in a deep forest back in the 90’s and has now decided to uncover it again, finding that the track has matured under the black soil. The sharp edges are now covered in smooth moss and the soundscape is immensely deep and moist. But it’s still a vibrant and very much effective track. Above all, it has loads of free space to let the listeners make up their own journeys as travellers into the world of sound created by Mullaert.

We float, on the flip side, is a beautiful and meditative ambient piece. It’s also the fastest way for the urban dweller to find him or herself floating in a serene lake surrounded by strong, green trees instead of floating in a sea of stress and anxiety. A set of headphones and this new release from Kontra-Musik and you’re there.

Wa Wu We - Travellers [Kontra Musik]

It’s always a real treat to hear fresh material from Efdemin, and his latest project looks set to be his most ambitious so far. The techno artist is currently prepping for the release of his Naïf mix, a blend between album and DJ mix that’s soon to drop on Curle Recordings. 

Comprised of 29 unreleased tracks, Naïf features new material from the likes of Margaret Dygas and Steve Bicknell, as well as 10 new cuts from Efdemin. Efdemin and Dygas will both be joining us on the same bill in just over a week, so he sent over an excerpt of the mix featuring tracks from both of the producers. Richly textured with chugging drums and trippy vocal clips, it covers the same kind of immersive techno both artists are likely to bring to Farringdon on 17th March.

Premiere: Naïf – Efdemin (excerpt) [Curle]

Though their first record came out some six months earlier, Voices from the Lake, a collaboration by the Italian techno artists Donato Dozzy and Neel, really came to life last summer at Labyrinth in Japan. This was where they debuted most of their work together, playing live in the closing slot on the second night of the festival. Even if you've never been to Labyrinth (this reviewer hasn't), it's hard to imagine a better time and place for this particular duo to perform: a softly lit gathering on a wooded mountainside, with their subtle but immense sounds flowing through a supposedly peerless sound system.

By the time this happened the new album was already finished—Dozzy and Neel had recorded  it earlier in the summer in Rome and used it as the basis for their live act. If they'd wanted to, they could have played it pretty much as is: even listening at home on headphones, Voices from the Lake has the effect of a meticulously planned stage performance, with every loop forming an essential piece of a larger composition. It's not an exaggeration to say it tells a story—it follows an unmistakable narrative arc, leading us through a carefully paced sequence of scenes, almost like some kind of wordless, abstract musical.

This level of complexity wouldn't be possible in most producers' hands. As an art form, techno often strives to make something emotionally engrossing without using conventional stimuli like melody or lyrics. Dozzy and Neel have clearly nailed this part of their craft. Most of the sounds on Voices from the Lake have no reference point in the material world (no pianos, strings, hi-hats, snares, rim shots, etc.), but somehow they still manage to be incredibly expressive: one beat sounds uneasy, while others seem determined, weary, contemplative, optimistic and so on.

The album has a strong visual element as well. Dozzy and Neel have an incredible ear for sound design (Neel has also mastered many of Dozzy's past records, including his album K, along with numerous other releases on Prologue), and this allows them to give each moment of the album a vivid foreground, midddleground and background, each with countless details to pick apart. The mind's eye has a lot to work with, though it's never clear exactly what. At times the scene could be lush and organic, most notably on "Circe," which is loaded with distant wails and chirps that conjure up a teeming rain forest (call me crazy but I hear a cricket on every off-beat). Other parts of the album are colder, more metallic, with sonar beeps and vague industrial imagery. The album weaves between the two seamlessly, and often paints a landscape that's somewhere in the middle.

These details make Voices From the Lake captivating from one moment to the next, but there's  a broad compositional element that keeps the whole thing moving. More than having just a beginning, middle and end, it has an introduction, several chapters and an epilogue. Each unfolds elegantly into the next using a system of tension and release. To take a simple example, the first  20 minutes feel like an overture—in "Iyo," we get a writhing synth tone that signals the start of something, not unlike the groan of an orchestra warming up. In the next track, "Vega," the drums take on a greater sense of urgency, but the feeling of anticipation remains. Only with arrival of a steady kick drum and a soothing pad, three tracks into the album, do we feel that things have really begun.

This isn't so different from how composition works in most techno tracks, except that here the process is spread out across a much longer period. Each song on Voices from the Lake is between four and nine minutes long, and most of these work in groups of three or four to set the stage for a single peak moment. The most memorable of these moments is "S.T. (VFTL Rework)," a new version of a song Dozzy recorded for an earthquake benefit compilation called Composure: Ambient Techno for Japan. By the time this track comes in, some 30 minutes into the album, we've gotten used to the idea that rhythm, texture and atmosphere might be all we're going to get. This makes the arrival of smooth major chords, slowly cascading into the mix, truly climactic. Suddenly the album has an emotional dimension you didn't see coming.

In a way there's nothing radical about Voices from the Lake. Rather than thinking outside the box, it decidedly works within techno's basic fundamentals: sound design, linear rhythms, slow build-ups, etc. But this is an important part of what makes the album exceptional. With nothing more at their disposal than techno's characteristically sparing palette, Dozzy and Neel have built something so rich that it has the feeling of a feature presentation. It's hard to imagine something so purely techno having more impact than this.

BNJMN's (@bnjmnnn) album Hypnagogia gets the remix treatment. The Berlin based Brit is a common name seen on Delsin since 2014. With his adventurous techno ambient sounds he released several EPs and his latest full length back in 2018 on the Amsterdam imprint. Here he invites four of his favourite producers to give their twist to his latest album.

Up first, Efdemin turns one of the title tracks into a driving and fierce techno twister where Italian producer Luigi Tozzi eases out the bounciness of Indub's original into an atmospheric dub-techno floater. On the flip rRoxymore does her magic with squeaky percussion riffs and playful melodies turning the original ambient jam into a vivid dance floor roller. Finalizing the pack is Nous'klaer mainstay Mattheis using his instinctive feeling for melodies to create a hypnotizing yet gentle version of Moth Lines.

@danza-nativa is happy to welcome Sebastian Galante (A.K.A. Seph), one of the most sophisticated producers of our scene, into their label During his fifteen years of experience with electronic music, he has won the recognition of key artists and labels from all around the world: Echocord, Insurgentes and his own imprint Aula Magna have been housing his latest musical outputs. Now, Danza Nativa are glad to bring you his newest -and deepest- techno works for what is their seventh release.

His sound design and mixing skills are some of the features that have gained him recognition, and "Ulizen" EP is a perfect example of these. It consists of three tracks that unfurl into beautiful synth pads, warm textures and strident percussions, some of his very own characteristics. 

To round it all up, the french artist BLNDR re-imagines Seph's sounds on a fine and elegant remix that completes the release.

Lucy is the nom de techno of Italian-born and Berlin-based Luca Mortellaro, one of the genre’s most exciting and ambitious DJ/producers. Since 2009, Mortellaro has focused his work through his own Stroboscopic Artefacts label, building an imprint and personal discography that has established itself as one of techno’s finest.
Lucy (née Luca Mortellaro) is one of the pre-eminent sonic adventurers of his time. Not bound to conventional pre-conceptions of what an electronic musician, producer, or DJ must be, Lucy has evolved his distinct sound signature by reconciling the deeply personal with the esoteric, and by harmonizing the spheres of technology and biology. In doing so, he has become rare as an artist, in his ability to please an audience while also introducing them to elements they were not yet familiar with and thereby pushing them out of their comfort zone. Whether he is acting in the role of producer, DJ, performer, or Stroboscopic Artefacts’ curator, Lucy’s clear passion for creative evolution and mutation is something that continues to attract new listeners, and keeps giving his current supporters new reasons to continue tuning in.
