Sheet Ghost

I wrote this song after realising that for half my life I had been defining myself by the qualities of the people I was dating, instead of knowing and being comfortable in my own power. It references some of the toxic experiences that happened in those formative love affairs and, looking back, it's amazing that I thought these things were normal at the time. (NB: I'm not saying dating me was exactly a barrel of laughs...)

Shower holder backstory: I found a shower holder in my dad's garden 3 years ago. The shower holder's sound is inharmonic, so I've found it interesting to make music exclusively with it. The creative limitation has unlocked lots of ideas I'd not heard before, it's been so exciting to think about the cultural baggage of musical instruments! In April 2024 the shower holder had its live debut, after being selected from an open call to play at Niche (a wonderful experimental event in London). 

Track recording process: For this song, each layer was recorded at a different speed, then each was slowed down, so that the separate layers are at different pitches. For the lowest bass note, the entire song was recorded in 6 seconds, then slowed down to fill the full 2 minutes 49 seconds! When all assembled together, the notes create a melody. The slowing down also allows us to hear partials from above the audible frequency range. Then there's some freehand microtonal pitchshifting on top.
