She flies yonder where they swarm so thickly; she is the largest of them, and never remains upon the earth, but flies up again into the black cloud. Sometimes on a winter's night she flies through the streets of the town, and breathes with her frosty breath upon the windows, and then they are covered with strange and beautiful forms, like trees and flowers.

Commissioned for the 2018 Lasham Music Festival (Hampshire, United Kingdom), Timeline of Terra Firma charts the changes that take place in an imagined landscape throughout its history. These changes could be the result of natural or manmade processes. Ultimately, they result in the landscape being altered unrecognisably by the ‘present day’.

Please note this is a rehearsal recording by a student ensemble, all of whom are sight reading.

Timeline Of Terra Firma

To Run With The Tigers was inspired by Angela Carter’s The Tiger’s Bride, which is a retelling of Beauty and the Beast. 

Beauty’s father loses her to the Lord (who is heavily disguised) in a game of cards. The Lord takes Beauty away to his castle, telling her that she may return to her father if she first allows him to see her undressed. The Tiger also promises her many gifts and to return the fortune her father lost along with her. The girl refuses angrily for several days, despite receiving many bribes from the Lord. Eventually, the Lord removes his disguise for the girl, revealing himself to be a tiger. After this, Beauty undresses for him. The Tiger then returns her father’s fortune, and tells Beauty she is free to leave. However, she chooses to stay and is transformed into a tiger. 

In this work, the orchestra represents Beauty and the soloist represents the tiger. It was premiered at the Royal Northern College of Music by Anna Tulchinskaya (violin) and the RNCM Brand New Orchestra, conducted by Joe Judge, 2019.
