The song is a bit of an existential fever dream, circling questions of care. On a very hot day in Neukölln, where I live in Berlin, the air seems to hover above the concrete. Ambient heat seeps into your bones and into your thoughts, until it feels like the world is trying to spit you out. As a child, heat like that was simply a sensation to be endured - and perhaps even enjoyed. Now it arrives as a painful question, a reminder, a reprimand - and a warning of so many other frightening things. The song comes out of that state.

Hull-based collective O’Phantom return with their first release since their self-titled, self-funded EP dropped in May this year. The new single, Something (I Know), marks a bold continuation of the band’s introspective, lo-fi sound. Featuring Lucy Jowett (Dead Naked Hippies), the track builds on O’Phantom’s signature aesthetic - melding shimmering guitars, dual harmonies, and ghostly layered vocals to quietly yet powerfully explore themes of loss, ageing, and isolation. 

Fresh from two packed shows at this year’s Great Escape in Brighton and a run of dates across grassroots music venues nationwide, the DIY East Yorkshire outfit embodies the spirit of the UK’s underground music scene - one that values community over social media hype. Songwriter Daniel reflects on the single: “Something (I Know) was the first song we wrote together. It started as a few chords on an acoustic guitar and grew into this brooding, atmospheric post-punk track - thanks in no small part to Rowan’s (bass) knack for deconstructing song structures. Working with Matt Peel (TRAAMS, Yard Act, Honesty) on the recording really brought it to life. We came out with a track we’ll love forever.”
